want a new digital camera

So, I've had this APS camera for 4 years and I've finally decided to buy a digital to replace it. I already have a digital camcorder, but the resolution is just not that great for pictures; plus, with the upcoming trip to Pasadena I figured now's a good time to buy.

I'm looking for something with good zoom and 4 megapixels (I'm still in college here). And even though most of you won't like this I'm going to buy it at Best Buy because I have a credit card and can get 18 mos same as cash.

I just compared 5 different cameras online and came up with the Kodak Easy Share DX7440. Does anyone have comments or advice in this area? What cameras would you suggest? Is 4 megapixels even good enough to take photo quality pictures?

I'm confused, you want to get away from an APS, but you don't want to spend alot of $. if you want a great digital, point and click, lots of features and big *** disply, go get the 5.0 MP Sony, should cost you about $400. or a Digital Reble.

but that Sony is nice for what you want. the damn thing kills me, came out about a month after I bought my Kyocera, and my **** is only 3.6 MP and the Sony cost the same or close. what a pisser.

Canon A80.

There was a thread on digital cameras here a couple of weeks ago. Actually, there's a thread on digital cameras here every month or so. You might do a search to see if any are still around.

I usually refer to CNET for info on digicams and cell phones. Here's their Top 4MP digicams

However, you really don't even need 4 megapixels to take really good pictures. A friend of mine has a Canon A70 and he uses it for taking pictures of friends/family and used it on his last vacation. That camera does very well and is only 3MP. Since this is your first digicam and you're already having to put it on a credit card, I'd go for the A75; it's top rated in 3MP and the pictures will satisfy your need. If you insist on the 4MP, I'd look into other (better) options to the one you're looking at now.

Is this a point and shoot, or are you going for something more?

FWIW - the Nikons that I have and have used are all very good once you learn the menus. The only Kodak I've used (DC) did have very good colors though.

And 4 MP is plenty big unless you're going to make very large reproductions (bigger than 8x10).

Thanks for the replies. I got a PM about the quality of the Kodak, so I searched some more and compared the Canon A95 and the Fuji E500. They both seem pretty similar and have gotten similar reviews on epinions.com. I will do some more research on these (and others) and hopefully will find something today.

Good reviews of digital cameras
I am on my 4th digital camera. Olympus 2020, Fuji602Z, NikonD70SLR and work just bought me Canon S70 point and shoot)
Generally, pixel count is amazingly overrated.
More important is what you want to do with it.
One common complaint with digitals is the shutter lag...the time between when you press the button and the picture actually takes. Some cameras have a sports mode that reduces this lag.
For the money, it is hard to beat that Fuji camera listed above, but it is kind of bulky by some people's standards. The Olympus is about 4 years old and is 'only' 2 megapixels, but it takes GREAT pictures.

The other Canon listed above is also an excellent choice.

We talked to several people in the store about the cameras we were interested in, and they all chose the Canon over the Fuji. We ended up with the Canon sd300 elph due to the fact that the A95 takes AA batteries and apparently drains the camera after relatively few shots. So far, we're happy with it. We'll see what kind of pictures we have in Pasadena.

Really. I can count on my left hand how many times I've charged my A80's batteries. The charge lasts forever for me, I wonder if it's something to do with the A95? The great thing about the Powershots is that if you run out and you're in a pinch, go to the quicky mart and get some regular old batteries and pocket your rechargeables.
