Walking on a metal roof

I have to walk on my standing seam roof. It's 3 stories high and it scares the **** out of me ever since I watched my father slide off of one and plant himself face first on the patio.

What is the best footwear. Sneakers? Hard Rubber? Barefoot?

Magnetic Houseslippers? If you do it in the middle for the day, sneakers will be best because they will melt and stick to the roof.

In shipyards where they walk on a lot of unfinished steel, the footware of choice is are the steeled toed workboats with the yellow rubber souls. It seems the tread pattern is not as important as the stickyness of the rubber. They also don't walk steal early in the morning, if you wait for the sun to come out the water evaporates off the steel and the pores open up which helps footing. If you are going up three stories, you should wear a safety line.

I'm curious as to why YOU have to walk on your roof. Pay someone else to do whatever it is you have to do . . . and make sure they are insured.

There are shoes made for roofing - Cougar Paw boots are what one of my clients gives to his roofers, who do install metal. The 2nd choice - according to my client - are boat shoes with new gum rubber soles. You want to maximize the surface area and the stickiness level. Barefoot would be the worst with the sweat. Lugged boots have little surface area. I would wait also wait for the roof to heat up to increase the sticky factor.

But, none of that makes a difference if the roof has pollens, dust, dirt on it. I would also hose down the roof the night before to clear off as much dust as possible.

You need to rope yourself in with a full safety harness - especially at that height. Do you have a chimney you can use as an anchor? Also, most contractors install anchors in new metal roof installations near the ridge line in this area. Do you see a something in your attic that looks like an anchor on a beam with a aircraft cable loop headed out the ridge vent?

Good luck.

Step in a bowl of pancake syrup before you climb up. Or better yet, wrap your boots with duct tape with he sticky side out.
