Wacom Tablet

So I ordered a Bamboo small today. It's the cheapest one they make- $60.00 from Amazon with S&H. Wacom makes them all the way up to 12"x12" with twice the sensitivity of the one I got, but I want to try it out before I spend $350 on a Intuos3 8"x6".

Here are some pictures. First is the one I just bought, and second is the professional model that I am thinking about.

The backstory is that I love to draw, but I have less time than I used to. At this point in my life, the easist way for me to pursue this hobby is to take pictures (my brother gave me his old 3.2 megapixel sony camera) and then draw them on the computer. I am ecstatic about the possibility of this working well, since it will allow me to use any sort of medium/tool and rapidly correct errors. GIMP and Inkscape both work well with Wacom stuff, so I will report back when I have something to show. If I can remember how photobucket works, I may even throw some stuff up.

The illustrator at my work uses the smallest Wacom Intuos tablet. He draws/paints extremely well with it. I asked him if using a bigger tablet is worth it and he doesn't think so.

I've seen him work with it....to me it seems more important to know your software apps well (he uses the latest photoshop) and of course just keeping up your technical skills of drawing.

I don't think I recall from meeting the artist at my friend's game studio...tablets bigger than 6x11. I thought it would be unnatural to "draw" on such a small surface but since it's mapped to the size of your screen it doesn't seem to bother them. It just looks like it takes some practice to adjust and then it's smooth sailing.

BTW good for you picking back up the pencil as it is. I'm in the same boat you are. I have the itch to draw and create again...which I haven't done seriously since HS. I've even entertained thoughts of enrolling in school again and getting an undergrad in graphic design or studio art for fun.

the bigger tablets can actually be sort of a pain in the *** if you have large screens because you have to move your hand a lot to get a natural stroke out of it.
