No, you can thank the president of Iraq for that. He would not agree to a SOF agreement that would exempt US soldiers from prosecution by Iraqi courts. Obama tried to negotiate a deal and could not. Not wishing to keep troops in Iraq when the elected government wanted them out, we left. Too bad for the Iraqis but they elected that ahole Shiite.

The fact that some right wingers continue to defend our ex president on this issue is akin, in my mind, to dems continuing to suck up to Al Sharpton. Just disgraceful.

I never voted for Obama and think him a poor president but you are wrong on this issue: I followed the SOF discussions closely at the time and they went as I described and were discussed at length in the foreign policy sites. The Shiiites wanted the Americans out or subject to their jurisdiction. They were refusing to compromise with the Sunni or power share with them and that is why the current disaster is unfolding. Outside the tent, most Sunnis are either staying neutral or leaning towards the ISIL forces. It is a disaster of the Shiites own making. That is why they have ousted the president and got a new one,
