vs Wayland Baptist

Not sure what happened but Gaston left the floor at the beginning of the 3rd and has not returned :idk: Went to the locker room but I don’t know if serious

SIDEARMLiveStats

Morris and Gonzalez go a combined 4 of 18. Maybe Vic had them working harder at perimeter defense.
Looks like our inside players dominated tonight. Hope Gaston is ok.
Ndjakalenga with a nice stat line - really showing what she can do. If she can get the foul problem fixed, look out.

With Rori's shooting that's 8 for 30 from the starting backcourt, and 3 for 13 as a team from beyond the arc. Free throws were sloppy also at 22 for 33. We'll definitely need to tighten that up quickly.

In the first quarter, you could hear Vic yelling down the court "INSIDE!" and then the ball went out to Sonja outside the 3-point line and she took a shot and missed. He was furious and turned around and mentioned for 3 players to check in to take over. He was really trying to work the inside game. They didn't do the weave dribble drive this game. He was not happy most of the game.

I assume that Wayland Baptist played a zone. So the shooting numbers weren't very good again in terms of perimeter jump shooting, especially from the three point line. I know it's early, but that area is still a huge question mark.

Wow, Vic was really down on the gals after a 60-point win. I don't think I've ever seen him this way. Whatever chapped him off must be pretty important, otherwise you'd think they'd just lost the game listening to his comments. He's the coach, I trust him, but was still surprised by the presser.

Probably right on that. I think that's one of the reasons Vic's not real happy right now. The other one is, we will likely face the #6, #7 and #5 teams in the nation between 11/14 and 11/21. So there's not much time to get things fixed.

Outside shooting will always come and go. Stats from one game are essentially meaningless to project forward onto the rest of the season.

Free throws, however, should be a little better than 2 of 3. Get that to 3 of 4 and we're solid.

Yep, it was the free throws I was referring to. We have to to better and 75% I can be okay with. Three point shots are great when they're going in, but they're typically not high percentage shots (with a few exceptions). You live by the long ball, you die by the long ball.

We're going to lose some games early. Vic mentioned in a presser that there.is no defensive stopper (JAT, Audrey)..and the they hadn't got the defense down yet. We're taking Morris and Gonzales who are offensive minded guards and asking them to learn to play the type of defense required by Vic. I can definitely see their offensive numbers suffering.

Agreed! A couple of losses early might not be such a bad thing. That would reveal what it's going to take to have the kind of success the rankings think we're capable of. You know Vic's plan is to have it all come together by post season as in the previous two years.

Vic is all about the process of improving. Would that more fans could maintain that perspective as well.

Since flaws and weaknesses can be exposed in wins just as easily as in losses, put me down for wanting to win our big non-conference games. A win at UConn will go a long way toward earning a #1 national seed, and make more national recruits take notice.

Not every game will be won by defense because often times the opponent is very good offensively, and we will have to match that offensive output.

I’m calling it now. A sweep. Undefeated. And If it doesn’t happen, ultimate nachos for everyone on me.

(BTW - for those you you looking for the good ‘ole nachos with the Rico’s cheese and hold the fancy - you can get them at the Bavarian place that sells the bratwurst. Jalapeños at the condiment bar.)

Has anyone heard anything about Gaston? She left the court early in the third and never returned to the bench.

I've not seen any mention of her why she left the game. Gaston looked find physically. Hopefully it was something as simple as she wasn't feeling well. I believe Vic said in the press conference that Khadijaa had strep a few days before the exhibition game.

I hope Gaston is okay. She & Vic both spoke at the dinner about what a rough time she's had with injuries, and how she felt really good for the first time. Reminded me of Jordan Whittington in football.
