vs. Rice preview

I really respect Mike Bloomgren (and Rice for not firing him quickly) because of how he treats his players and plays the "long game" for improvement. It would have been easy and exciting to get rid of him after 4 seasons with little improvement, but then there was a little bit more improvement last year, and we're getting them right when the AAC is kind of wide open.

Offense: JT Daniels will still probably be playing QB against us 7 years from now, but what really makes their offense tick is how they spread the ball to the WRs. Luke McCaffrey and their TE will be the "bail out" guys. They lost arguably their best receiver to the portal (the enormous Brad Rozner), but converted QB JoVoni Johnson reminds me of the kind of talent that Chiles and Heard had when they switched positions. Their #2 receiver will probably be Cedric Patterson, a speedster whose season was cut short almost immediately last year, so he has something to prove. I'm not worried about their run game. They'll probably rotate three guys and whichever has the hot hand will get the majority of carries, but all three of those guys would probably be ranked below all of our RBs anyhow. According to Owls grumblings, the big issue has been the OL. It was addressed by bringing in two starters from the portal, but I still think our D will have their way with the Rice front.

They turn the ball over too much, and whether Daniels is the "fix" for that is up in the air. I bet we force a couple of turnovers this weekend.

Defense: Their entire D is built around the LB corps, which is arguably stronger than ours outside of the great individual performances of Ford. Josh Pearcy kind of plays that "edge" hybrid position and reminds me of Addai. Conti and Morrison are both quick and surprisingly hard-hitting for their size. They're solid fundamentally and are the main pass rushers and rush stoppers.

The issue with Rice is their DL. We should be able to manhandle it. They rely on their DT (Floyd) kind of like we would with Coburn, but there's literally zero depth behind him at the position. Their DBs aren't particularly bad, but when opponents created time with their pass blocking last year, they got torn apart. Even someone like Jordan Whittington will be able to make room if our OL does its job. I'm hoping we don't have to play starters the whole game.

My prediction on the thread was 56-13, but I'm thinking it could go a score in either direction.

They have a QB in his 9th season and a McCaffery at WR. That's worth something. I think they'll move the ball between the hashes, but not score a lot of points.

Don’t over pursue Daniels. If/when he escapes the rush, someone needs to clean his clock. Somewhat like quandre diggs on mahomes.

Hill and Lefau have to step up for our LB corps to work. And I bet they will.

Baxter and Muhammad have mad talent and skills.

Rice is one of our stranger traditional rivals.

And we have some pretty strange traditional rivals...
(boy do we ever!)

:rice:

For the sake of The Institute, they should just drop football altogether, and only compete in basketball, baseball, etc. at the highest level. They could make their awesome historic football stadium (with the not-so-awesome bleachers) into some sort of outdoor art/sculpture museum or something. Or build some engineering labs under the bleachers...

I agree. Agent zero was an over achiever at lb and we needed that badly last year. Hate the he got hurt with the cowboys but wish him a good recovery. I think its crazy not to put Hill out there from the start. He is a game changer and has been disruptive by all reports since he arrived. I understand he may make mistakes as a "freshman" but he needs to see the field a lot!

I think its funny to see articles saying Texas could hang 70 on Rice if these things line up. Hey its pre season and everyone is a world beater today. Listening to Sarks presser, he does the typical coach speak that Rice is a veteran team and has players all over the field. Yes, they have 11 out there each time but they should not even be in the game with the talent Texas has in every aspect. Guess we will see how it goes but Saturday should be a full fledged romp by the HORNS. I dont know what we can learn from this but playing someone other than ourselves has to be good prior to bama. I just hope to not see the false starts and other self inflicted wounds like last year. I also hope to see a dominant D that has gap integrity and DL pressure.

I used to get excited about freshman playing early but I learned it means the following:
1. The frosh are filling up time against an overmatched opponent to lessen the chance of an injury to a starter before the big game the following week.
2. Reward to frosh who came prepared to practice in Fall Camp.
3. Opportunity for frosh to show what they got in a real game vs scrimmage.

As such, I expect only 1/5 to 1/10 of the frosh playing in game 1 to actually be an impactful player by mid-season.

What better day to start Anthony Hill than the day we honor Derrick Johnson? It just doesn't get any better than that.

Hill, Lefau, and Bush (already a proven capable backup) will all have valuable roles to play this year at LB.

I'll be politically incorrect here at this hallowed time on the eve, eve of the season kickoff.

That we all hoist a glass of a liberal libation to toast and participate in the Rice Cheer!!!

Who is with me!!!? :coolnana:

The first UT game my dad took me to was Rice in 1967. Eleven-year-old me couldn't wait to hear this cheer he'd been prepping me for. I was still doing the cheer when I got home that evening. Momma put a stop to that real quick. My sixth-grade football coach was a fan of the Horns and he knew I went to the game, he even asked if they did it.

My uncle taught it to me when I was young. I also found it quite amusing.

My mother in law, a Rice graduate, wasn't nearly so sanguine about it though.

1. The one on the left made some recent big breakthrough in string theory, but doesn't know how many yards it takes to make a first down.
2. The next to left one thought it was approximately 3.1415927 meters for a first down.
3. Don't let the next to right one fool you. While she has genius level intelligence, after her first visit to the Offshore Technology Conference there in Houston she has become social and personable--very, very social and personable...
4. The one on the right understands football and is working on her algorithm for field goal kicking angles based on the precise wind speed and direction for every stadium in college football.

RICE! RICE! RICE!

They may not be models, but have you seen their cheer squad? That's a huge upgrade.
