This is sad because I didn't even know the Horns were playing tonight. There was a time I couldn't wait to watch every game.

Texas wins 89-61 and it doesn't look like it was ever really close.

Nice win as the Horns go 4-0!

Good win but ...always a but. 18-40 (45%) from the FT line with front court players accounting for 6-23 (26%) of that. Not a good sign for an undermanned team that needs every point it can get this season.

Well, the FTs are pretty consistent. 17/28 for 60.7% in the first game, 12/19 for 62.2% in game two; 18/24 for 75.0% in game three for 47-71 for a total of 66.2% coming into tonight’s game. In this game, Horns went 18-40 for 45%. The main culprits were Ridley (3-11), Ibeh (2-7) and Newsome (1-4) who combined to go 6-22 (27.3%). The rest of the team hit the team average coming in at 66.7% (12-18). Ridley and Ibeh will need to work on their FTs if they continue to get to the FT line as much as they did in this game. They did have a bad game as they usually hit over 50% of their FTs. But Ridley & Ibeh had only gone to the FT line 7 and 6 times, respectively, in the past three games. At this point, I don’t worry that much about their FTs. Ridley and Ibeh are probably going to be 50-60% FT shooters all season long.

I'm more concerned about how HBU started doing exactly what our prior three opponents were doing... jacking up uncontested shots with a bunch going in. Our rotation in the zone defense is pitiful, especially in the latter part of the first half against HBU. We opened up a 21-point lead, and then didn't score again for almost 4 minutes while HBU cut it to 11. Barnes teams since about 2008 seem to go through this too often. There's no reason to let vastly inferior opponents go off while you switch to a "cold" lineup. The only thing that jump-started that crap was Lammert going crazy from behind the arc, and then it was over.

Felix is so much better coming off the bench. He still had some ill-advised shots, but the turnovers were limited. The "twin towers" lineup with both Ridley and Ibeh playing together looked awkward, and neither of them made a huge difference then. I think Ridley is confused where he's supposed to be on the floor half the time. He was 18 feet away from the basket blocking a jumper, leading to a fast break, and then HBU would slice through him on the next possession. Very odd.

Reading some of the posts on the game threads thus far you wouldn't think the team was off to a 4-0 start. Honestly I thought the team would be very lucky to even manage a winning record in their pre-conference slate when I first saw the schedule. That could still be the case given the upcoming contests, but the 4-0 start is certainly encouraging. At points during those first few contests it looked like even a 7-6 pre-conference record was wishful thinking, so the way we fought back, and hung tough isn't what many of us expected based on last season, and given that we lost our top four scorers and have a freshman running the point. Probably going to be some rough games coming up, but still hope to see this team continue improving and maybe make it to the start of conference play with 8 wins under their belt. Whatever happens they've definitely exceeded my expectations thus far.

We should get a pretty good idea of where this team is in the next game against BYU at the CBE tourney in Kansas City next Monday. They are also undefeated, including a win over Stanford so far this season.

BYU will be taking on #21 Iowa St. this evening (ESPNU @ 8:30 CST), if anyone is interested in seeing them before our game.

Tonight's game should be a good one, or at least tell us a lot more about both teams. The BYU win against the Cardinal was impressive, esp since they were playing at Stanford and were without their leading scorer Haws (29.5 pts and 10.5 rbs avg their first two contests). He is due back tonight though.
