You might want to look at the new Honda Pilot. The 09 will have the smart cylinder technology that shuts off cylinders when you do not need them. Look at the Ed Wallace review on Fox 4 in Dallas on the internet. He gave a decent review. I believe he said he was getting over 25 mpg on the highway. I just sold my 2004 Pilot and it was a very good car. Not a cool car but good for the family.
I had a 2003 Volvo XC-90 for a couple years. Sold it before it started to break down on my and already had a transmission leak with just 70k miles on it. Good thing I had the extended warranty. In the two years I owned the car it had quite a bit of problems with it. Otherwise loved it, drove nice and had plenty of room. I'd do plenty of research before you go buy one though as apparently the 2003-2004 had a lot of transmission problems.
Looks like per Volvo, the transmissions were a BIG problem with the earlier generation (03' and 04') XC90. There was even a recall. The 06' 2.5 Turbo is supposed to be most reliable generation thus far. Minimal bew styling in the 07's+ and no major changes scheduled until 2010.

We own a '06 XC90 and love it. It really drives more like a sedan than a big SUV and the gas mileage is decent. We have a 2 yo little girl and it's great for small families.
The 7 seats are a bit of a misnomer becaue the final row of seating literally does not have any affordable legroom. There's only a very small slice of the human population that actually sit in those seats.
I bike and kayak and it's a reasonably easy car to outfit with a roof rack. Much easier to load than a Tahoe or similar.
We've owned the car for a couple of years and have not had a single major problem (knock on wood).
You might also want to look at the new Pathfinder. My sister has one and it seems very similar in features, yet offer far more legroom in rear row of seats.
