Vitale and Lavin pick Texas

yes they did pick michigan state. also, bobby knight picked yall as well....he said we got lucky against Misstake.....er Michigan State

I think they all picked Michigan State because they wanted to be trendy and not because they really believed the Spartans would win.

What kills me about Digger Phelps is he keeps talking about Texas's free-throw shooting (and it hasn't been great, but it's not terrible) but he says nothing about Memphis's free-throw shooting, which has been worse. It just hasn't mattered so far in the tournament. It likely will matter for both teams today.

The only one of the analysts worth listening to is Knight, and it's not merely because he keeps picking Texas. It's because if you bother to hear him out, he actually has very sound reasoning behind all of the picks he makes. He's not always right, but with Texas, he has been right because he knows this team very well. The rest of them sound like they just started paying attention to Texas a few weeks ago.

Memphis is such an unproven team. After watching them in person Fri, I think they can win it all or lose by 15 today.

Didn't Knight pick Pitt to win it all?

I'm not discounting his opinion, but rather pointing out that no matter how knowledgable the prognosticator, sometimes other factors come into play. Of course, roughly half the people picking this game will be right, as there doesn't seem to be much consensus, but being right and being right for the right reasons are two different things.

As for me, i have no idea which team "should" win. My gut says Memphis, but then . . .

Digger may have hated Texas at one time, but it was a while ago. I'd say he's more of a Texas lover than otherwise. The Elite Eight season a couple of years ago, he made me sick with how hard he was pumping the Longhorns. I prefer when he's picking a different team.

He's gone out of his way to praise Texas and its players over the last couple of years. I still detest the guy as an "analyst" but he seems more pro Longhorns than anyone featured at ESPN on the basketball broadcasts throughout the season.

Calipari appears to be the Guy Lewis of the new millennium.

He's a great recruiter, and people therefore assume he's a bad coach... but like Guy, who basically took Clyde Drexler when no one else would, and took Akeem from raw athlete to top pick in the draft, he has to be doing something right.

But, I think in this case people are looking for reasons not to have all four No. 1s advance. Texas probably has the best shot at it, so, why not?
