Visiting Preacher cites Bob Stoops as expert?

I'm not making this up. Our church(in north part of metroplex) is looking for a preacher, we've been without one for over a year. IMO, the committee had trouble finding suitable candidates because of the length of time it has taken. So they finally come up with two candidates. The way this works is the preacher visits for the weekend, and preaches a sermon on Sunday morning. So, the first guy was this morning. I get a strange feeling from him anyway, has nothing to do with this part of the sermon.

So he's talking about how he attended a motivational conference with Zig Zigler, he starts rattling off names of famous people who were at the conference; Laura Bush, some others I don't remember, and he says Bob Stoops, and makes a special point "you know who Bob Stoops is, don't you?".

pretty crazy IMO. Maybe he thought he was in Oklahoma.
Right now he lives in Arkansas. Didn't impress me a bit. Strangest thing I have heard from the pupit in a while.

Maybe he thought y'all would have a sense of humor!

Sorry to derail your thread, but I was a part of the search committee when my Austin church was looking for a preacher.

If you're still having trouble, I'd suggest you approach a university that is associated with your faith. There is likely an established network for this sort of thing already in place, where preachers who are looking to relocate can confidentially get their name out, and I'm not just talking about rookies right outta seminary.

As a further aside, I was very disappointed to discover the some of the details of church politics I had spent the 30 years of my life so naively unaware of.

yes, we probably do have some sooners. This church is fairly rich, so I'm surprised we have had trouble. Just the opposite from a couple of years ago, when we were hiring an involvement minister. We had three candidates come in, all were high-quality, and get this, we chose the man that had been assigned the following topic to speak on:

Submission by women.

(they assigned all three candidates because we were on a study through one of the books in the new testament and he just got lucky)

He made a good joke at the start of his class about this topic, and off he went.
