Virtual PC for Mac users

Any special tips I need to know if I decide to go this route? I'm running 10.3 now & will probably upgrade to Tiger soon, but Mrs. Ghost might be looking into a business venture that would require us to have a Windows OS. We've got two options:

1) buy a cheap, used Windows laptop for her business use
2) buy another Mac & let her use our existing iBook for business (after installing Virtual PC)

I really don't know anything about the software she needs to run but the processing demands should be fairly minimal. If we go w/ VPC is there a version of Windows that it seems to work better with?

Any tips are appreciated.

Slow, slow.
I have vpc 6 on my G4 at home; I only use it for one thing (gps software), but it's agonizingly slow to launch. I couldn't bear doing it every day. Also, no matter how much RAM you have it will only use 512meg.

At work I use remote desktop for the few occasions i absolutely have to run windows.

VPC 7 is out, but has higher cpu requirements (ghz) than I have. It's supposed to be better. If I only occasionally had to run windows, I'd probably stick with vpc, but if id really needed to do it a lot I'd get a cheap pc.

I'd also investigate to see exactly what she needs Windows to run; you'd be surprised sometimes at what is now compatible.

Here's a lot of firsthand experiences with Virtual PC &: macintouch report

Thanks for the tips & the link. That forum was quite an eye-opener!

I'm more inclined to just get her a used windows notebook on the cheap. I haven't seen this software that she needs to run yet but the seller has already informed her it's not mac compatable.

It doesn't make much sense to spend the $$ on VPC plus a Windows OS if it's going to be that slow & troublesome to run on a mac. I guess I can find a cheap Dell or Toshiba laptop w/ a wifi card & see if I can connect it to our airport network. If not I would imagine I could just cat 5 it to the DSL router's spare port & she'd at least have internet (if not wireless).
