Vet Recommendations in Austin?

Thought there was a thread about this a while ago, but couldn't find it. I'm looking for a vet for my dog here in Austin, I live just south of the river but would be willing to go to other parts of town if the vet was worth it. I think my dog might either have allergies/asthma or an upper respiratory infection, but also just want to find a vet in general.

May be a bit far, but my friend's GF (Dr. Clemens) works at the clinic by 183 and Anderson Mill. Between my friend and his GF, they have 3 dogs, 2 cats, a horse and maybe some other animals I don't know about. Don't know her that well, but she's a hell of a vet.

Dr. Spitz across from Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin. He's an aggie, but then so are most vets.

Go to Dr. Swallows, across from Dr. Spitz. But he's a Sooner.

God that was lame...

I was also going to suggest the clinic across from magnolia. My friend took her dog with distemper there for years before she moved to Houston and always trusted them, and she is SUPER anal about her dog.

We take our critters to Brykerwood Vet Clinic off 38th street over by the hospital, and they're awsome. They've always been great to our "kids", all of which were quite pathetic when we adopted them.

I've been taking my animals to South Lamar Animal Hospital for years and they're the friendliest most professional Vet clinic I dealt with in Austin.

Not only that, but based on what friends have told me, they are one of the most reasonably priced Vets in town. Since you're south of the river you might want to stop by and check them out. Tell them that Buster's (the huge friendly pit bull) dad sent you.

My family and I have been using Dr. Treadwell for years. They're awesome. Right across the street from ACC Rio Grande.

Aside from being a top-notch veterinarian, Dr. John Treadwell wore #60 for UT back in the early 1960s. You may have seen the famous photo from the 1962 UT-Arkansas game of John & Pat Culpepper knocking the hell out of Arkansas' Danny Brabham at the Longhorn goalline, causing a turnover that helped preserve the Horns' 7-3 win.

Great guy, tremendous vet, & a Longhorn Legend to boot!
(You have to get an early appointment during football season, though...He's at football practice every day)

i had a very bad experience with Brykerwood and have talked to a couple others who also had bad experiences there- i wouldn't recommend them.
i have now used Lake Austin Blvd Animal Hospital for 4 years - same one as mentioned above, across from Magnolia. Dr. Spitz is great and very knowledgable, and he has some other vets working for him now that are also good - Dr. Hamby is the name of one. they also have good hours and are open late (til 9pm, i think).

When we lived in Austin we took our dog to the South Austin Veterinary Clinic on S. 1st - (North of 71) Great place and great people. They really took good care of us.

My dog growing up and my sisters two dogs now all went to Dr May at Crossing Animal Clinic on Anderson Mill Road, between 620 and 183. Super friendly guy, very trustworthy, very stable practice. Highly recommended.

TornJock, I had no idea about that with Dr. Treadwell. I always wondered why there were so many UT football posters at his clinic.

And after going there for so many years, I have never actually spoken to him. I always talk to his wife (who is a wonderful lady, by the way).

I guess next time I bring the mutt in I'll ask him to relate that story for me.

I've been using John Treadwell for about 12 years. When I adopted my dog from Town Lake they had a list of local vets and I didn't have a clue about any of them. Then I saw John's name and knew him and his wife because I taught his daughter in 7th grade several years before.

When people would ask who my vet was and I'd say John Treadwell, they'd go, "You mean Johnny Treadwell, THE Johnny Treadwell!" All those UT things in the office made more sense when I figured out he was a longhorn legend.

John and his wife Peg are great people to work with. It's a mom and pop kinda of place, just the two of them, so you don't have to deal with a lot of different people when you go in and they don't try to get you to buy a lot of things most vet clinics push on you today.

Last Christmas I had to put down the dog I adopted that day from Town Lake. I can't tell you what a huge support Peg was for me. She went above and beyond in helping me deal with the loss of the most incredible creature that was my child for almost 12 years.

By the way, John was always there when Bevo was brought to A&M for anything and his four daughters were all outstanding athletes. The daughter I taught received a full scholarship in volley ball to Notre Dame and ended up marrying a Notre Dame football player who now plays for Minnesota.

Ted Koy, running back on the '69 National Championship team is a highly respected vet in Georgetown and is a helluva nice guy. He'll be more than happy to talk football with you too.
