Verlis Martin

I hear Verlis Martin (SR) - CB from Aldine Eisenhower, 6'0 / 165 /4.38 wants to come to Texas.

Plays in the same backfield as Craig Loston. He's the #1 cover CB at Eisenhower. He missed a couple of games last year to injury (tailbone injury on a game saving INT, and a shoulder injury on a tackle).

This year, he's at CB again, but might also start at WR / KR / PR because of his speed. We already have Greg Timmons, WR from Eisenhower, committed

Anybody know / heard anything about V. Martin? He's been to see us once, and I think he's coming back, but hasn't been offered to my knowledge. He'll be at Nike 7-on-7 tourney in Beaverton next month...

Good kid. Good player. We could use a good kid who is a good player, if you know what I'm sayin...

I do recall hearing about this kid. Sounds like a player. The challenge is available scholarships. I would say the chances of him ending up here are slim to none. We just have such good depth at DB already and we've added Eryon Barnett, Kenny Vaccaro, and Marcus Davis for '09. I would say we have no more than 3 more spots for '09 so the only way I see us bringing in another DB is if it is a 5-star guy like Dre Kirkpatrick, someone you just can't pass on. Probably unlikely we take another WR either. We just have so many on the roster already...

I thought that might be the case. It's late for him to have not gotten an offer yet. The kid can play and he's a good kid. I'd hate for this to be one of those "how did we miss on this kid" situations.

In my opinion, he makes Loston better, because he's a cover corner with speed, and he has the range of safety and ball skills of a WR. If he was bigger, he'd be a VERY good safety. He's going to play somewhere. Here would be nice.

Here he is right here on rivals.com V.Martin

Wearing his OU chains and does rivals mean everything to you guys. lol. The kid is a great player and he'll be glad to come to OU and be a Sooner. Like you guys say he helps make loston better and is the fastest and best cover guy at eisenhower.By the way he's 5'11 163ibs. We be at his game watching him go both ways at WR and DB. GO SOONERS. You could try but it will be hard to get him to be a longhorn. We are putting in major work for this guy.

I agree that he will probably be a good player but unfortunately we have limited scholarships like everyone else and you can't get everyone you want.

You haven't seen in him in while, Sooner. I'll just leave that at that.

He's not in Rivals because he was injured and missed about 3 games last year. He's been to Texas, LSU, OU, and a few others... He can play, stays out of trouble, smart kid, works hard.

But, yes, OU is pushing hard for him.

yOU are right we havent seen him in a while but we do keep in touch with this player through e-mail and phone calls. He plans to come to OU before his trip to oregon or right after. GO SOONERS.

We have film on him so you guys need to contact him and tell him to get an updated rivals profile. Get some film from him or something. You guys just recruit off of rivals. You need to see games. Go and watch him when you guys go to watch Greg Timmons play. Then you tell me if he is an great athlete or not.

Yes; our staff only recruits off of Rivals; that is 100% correct. In fact, they never leave their desks. Its all done by computer now. Its amazing.

A scholarship has just opened up.

The #1 CB off one of the top defensive backfields in the state, who led the team in INTs - while missing two (or three?) games is there... (with no "rivals" ranking... i bet he'll have one by the end of the season.)

No problems "qualifying". Good grades. SAT is done.

Do it.

have any of you guys seen verlis play lately???
he reported to be starting on offense as well as cornerback...
the coaches say he's a great cornerback but may be a better reciever...

I bet that Verlis Martin now has a rivals and by friday of next week he will have his stars and highlight films posted on rivals. He will have more pictures and it has been reported that he has recieved offers from arizona state and university of houston to go along with the oklahoma offer coming very soon.

only1, i'm sure he's a great player, but you're not doing a very good job of convincing anyone here. Going both ways in high school is impressive but certainly not rare. And touting an offer list of AzSt and Cougar High doesn't tell me much either. Just stop, dude.

Just got SAT scores back - 1180... and now has an offer from Oklahoma State.

Has 4 INTs so far, and has shut down the top corner of every team Eisenhower has played.

No star or whatever... he can play CB and can return kicks - both very well.

He matches up with Greg Timmons every day in practice. Would be nice to see Texas come through with a steal here... another good kid and smart student-athlete.

Finished the season leading the greater Houston area with 9 INTs... (officially, he's listed with 8, because one of his INTs is somehow credited to Craig Loston).

but he's a "no-star" on rivals...

now has offers from OkSU and LSU... and will probably start as a Fr.

I guess we have enough DBs?

I be wondering if they teach the English language at all in Oklahoma. I know its hard with the core courses being Mobile Home repair, Meth lab procedures, creative car financing, effective inventory control ( lab meets at Burlington ), how to have a million dollars ( course synopsis - start out with $150 million and give it to T. Boone Pickens to invest ) and castration through bar fights. You would just think they could work in a little of the proper use of English
