Verizon to sell iPhones

For those of you about to upgrade your cell phone, you may want to wait a bit. Verizon is going to start selling IPhones in 2011. Allegedly AT&T is losing their contract as the exclusive marketer of those phones.

Almost certainly another story "leaked" directly from Apple. This is to slow down the Android momentum until January when Verizon gets the iPhone. In markets with multiple carriers selling the iPhone, Android is not doing as well as they are in single carrier markets. This move by Apple should go a long way toward slowing down Android in the US.

Certainly it is in the papers as a response to Android's numbers in the last quarter (where Android was #1 in new unit sales over iOS and RIM), it remains to be seen as to whether or not it references a true story. We've been hearing variations on this rumor for 3 years now.

Sounds like 4G/LTE will be desired for this version of the iphone, correct? If so, it looks like Austin isn't on the list for Verizon's initial 4G network upgrade. Is 4G/LTE required for using the phone and data at the same time or is that no longer the case with Verizon's 3G network?

Putting the cart before the horse there, Bob. Even if the rumor is true, that doesn't mean that the phone is going to be 4G enabled.

Had my articles mixed up... Here is the CNNMoney one taking a stab at the announcement of the Verizon iphone coinciding with their upcoming 4G network.

Chaz, there is no official word on the subject. Verizon officially says "ask Apple", and Apple says nothing. There is apparently some Verizon execs who say it is coming, but then most of these rumors over the last 3 years have originated with someone at Verizon saying that they want the iPhone.

Says a lot about Android momentum that Apple is rolling out the iPhone on Verizon and leaking it is doing so, in January, while Verizon is denying it. Apple is killing millions of Android sales over the holiday season. No wonder Verizon is denying it.

An interesting note is that both AT&T and Verizon have stated that they are moving to the same mobile network standard (LTE/4G). Makes Apple's life a whole lot easier if they don't need to support two different standards (e.g., CDMA and LTE). Hmm.

How much sweeter is life with LTE? Does this mean web pages load in 2 seconds vs 8 seconds, or what?

And for the record, Go Android, Go.
I'm waiting for the Xmas release of the Droid Pro or the one after that if I can be patient enough.
