Anyone eaten there yet? It opened recently where the old Alpenhof and Lazy Fork BBQ used to be.

I've been tempted to stop and try it but wanted to get some reviews first. Couldn't find any online.

If you have your ducks in order, just about any time you open a Mexican restaurant in Austin you should be able to make a go of it. The new owners of Verdes on Hamilton Pool Road off Highway 71 are hoping that will be the case. The cuisine is Mexican grill, somewhat similar to what Steve Southern does at The Iron Cactus The chef/proprietor (Joel Munugia) is a an alumnus of Carraba’s so he knows a thing or two about grilling.


Two prior business at that location (The Alpenhof and Lazy Fork) that emphasized steaks and BBQ ultimately didn’t make it. But who doesn’t like Mexican, right? So once more into the fray. And good luck to them! For more information, call 263-0500.

Yeah, I had seen that - apparently he hasn't reviewed it yet. I heard that it's a lot like Fonda San Miguel, sort of upscale Mexican food.

Heard a 30-second review from Balon on KLBJ today -- he said it was very good.

Rob Balon bases his reviews on how much free **** he gets from the restaurant. And if you've seen him, you know what that might take.

I am still not sure how Balon and Dale Rice are the most well known and respected food critics in Austin, Texas. Neither one of them has one single bit of credential to critique food and service. Dale Rice is absolute idiot when it comes to reviewing restaurants yet he makes Rob Balon seem almost servicable.

I have never heard Balon give a bad review to anything.

Granted, I don't listen to him that much (or read him if he is published somewhere).

but on the morning news, he never has a bad word to say, just cramming food in his mouth.

You can't respect a food critic that you recognize... any worth his salt is anonymous (or as much as possible).

Rob Balon is paid by the restaurants to do a review. That's why he doesn't do bad reviews.

and verdes is awesome. salsa. amazing. bobby flay type stuff needs to go down on hamilton pool road. everyone grab a blender and just dare to make salsa that damn good. i'd say "hot damn!" if it wasn't so lame to say nowadays..

Finally ate there this past weekend. Wasn't bad - my ribeye was good, but either someone left the lid off the salt shaker, or someone in the kitchen had seriously burnt taste buds, because my wife's tortilla soup and my poblano mashed potatos were waay too salty.
