Venice Hotel (yes, I searched)

Did a 3 month search, so forgive me if I missed something. I am looking for good experiences anyone has had with Venice hotels. I'm going to be there for a few days with the gf next month (after lake como and lake lugano) and, stupid me, don't have a place booked for venice......it's 4 nights IIRC. Anyway, not looking for "Marriott Venice" or the sort - more along the lines of a nice local place, canal view if possible. Anyway, price range of $250-300 USD per night or less is ideal.

Any suggestsions? TXHookem, I saw you had a travel blog about booking these things, but the link wouldn't work for me.

Try looking here -The Link - it is the "right" neighborhood if you want more of a local experience while being close to all the sights. It does not have a canal view, though. Ultimately, Dorsoduro is the sestriere you should stick to.

I know this goes against all conventional wisdom........

But whe I was there (and granted, we were in college), we were waiting in line at the tourism kiosk in the train station, and a guy came up to us and asked if we were looking for a hotel.

We were, and he lead us to a small hotel a half-block off of St. Mark's Square, that was nice, clean, comfortable, authentic and, best of all....CHEAP.

I'll have to dig to see if I can come up with the name of the place, but if you are feeling adventurous, you could consider this option.

Ed,

I am 10 years removed from having been to Venice, but when I lived in Italy Lido Island was a nice alternative to actually staying in Venice. And there are some nice places on Lido, a 5 minute ferry ride from Venice with the benefit of a view of Venice across the bay.

It allows you to upgrade hotels at least 1 star for the same price. And it is much quieter than Venice. You can stay in Venice as late as you want since the water taxis run until really late.

I've stayed at the Ca' Rialto which is in a fantastic location adjacent to the famous Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal. Canal views are available if you ask. The Ca' Rialto is an annex building to the more well-known Rialto Hotel (which runs $300 to $500+ per night) and was recommended by an Italian travel agent as a more modestly priced hidden gem. We had a nice large room with no problems whatsoever. Very friendly staff and the AC was cold which is important due to the temp and humidity. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Keep in mind that Venice is an old crowded city surrounded by salt water which takes its toll on buildings. Very few buildings have been freshly remodeled, especially on the exterior, which adds to the old world feel. What I'm trying to say is don't set your expectations too high regarding facilities and you'll have a wonderful time in Venice.

I just stayed at Hotel Al Gambero, in the "San Marco" part of town, two weeks ago. It is a very short walk (1 or 2 minutes) from St. Mark's Square, and also only 1 or 2 minutes away from the Rialto bridge and the Grand Canal. There aren't canal views though, I believe.

I thought it was great. Not a Marriot like you said, but the room was totally clean, bed was comfortable, the shower was great, which was a huge deal for us because it was so much better than those we had in Rome and Paris. The included breakfast was also the nicest continental breakfast we had on the trip. It was cheaper than you described. All around, it was very comfortable and convenient as far as walking to the main attractions. I would stay there again.

I repeat this to people based on a trip to Venice when we stayed in a hotel in Dorsoduro and then in San Marco... if you have a choice, do not stay in San Marco. Stay in Dorsoduro or Castello or another "local" sestriere as San Marco is too touristy.

thanks all. i checked the ca realto and it was booked. after reading the reviews on the al teatro b&b i booked that and the owner even discounted it 35EU per night without me asking.
