Vehicle Insurance Question

My daughter is in her freshman year at....gulp...Texas aTm (I know, I know....it's my ex's doing!) and her car crapped out. I live up here in Maryland and want to send her my truck for her to use for a while (like three years). She is not on my insurance yet. My question is do I have to register and insure the truck out of Texas, or do/can I simply add her to my insurance out of Maryland and leave the truck registered in Maryland, since she's just "borrowing" it.

I have not asked my insurance agent yet.

I don't think the insurance and the registration state matter but if you put her on your insurance then you will be the one paying so tell your ex to add your truck to their insurance and tell her new husband to pay the bill

Insurance companies generally won't insure a vehicle that is not titled in the policyholder's name. Leased vehicles, naturally, are an exception. I wouldn't recommend you to delegate the responsibility of insuring your vehicle to someone else anyway. If you daughter hits someone, you as the owner of the vehicle would be the one to get sued, yet any claim payments under the policy would be paid to your ex. Not the best scenario for covering your ***.

Your insurance company probably doesn't care if the vehicle is titled in Texas and you reside in Maryland. They shouldn't have a problem with the vehicle being garaged and principally driven in another state either, as the college kid out of state situation is a frequent issue. Adding your daughter as a driver on your policy should not be a problem provided that she has a decent driving record.

State laws and insurance company rules vary, so discussing the situation with your insurance agent is really the best place to start.

Been insuring autos/bikes for +40 years, worked in the insurance business +34 years, including 27 with the Texas Department of Insurance and I've never had my auto/motorcycle insurance company ask for a copy of my title.

I'm insured on my parents' policy out of state. Not a problem. My parents rates got jacked up though cause I'm now the primary (only) driver on the vehicle.

Since you own the vehicle, why would you want to change the registration?

I have never been asked for a copy of my title either, but that doesn't mean a title search wasn't run by my insurance carrier. I know of one major carrier in Texas that used to run title searches on a regular basis to see if vehicle's titles were in the same name as the policyholder. I'm not sure how widespread this practice is currently and none of that really matter in this situations. There should be no reason to change the title or register the vehicle in Texas period.

The main point I was trying to make is in regards to the notion of having someone else (ex-wife in this case) insure a vehicle that you own.

Assuming that the ex-wife doesn't tell their insurance company that they don't own the vehicle and the insurance company doesn't ask, check the title, or even care about how it is titled - why would someone want to delegate the responsibility of insuring your vehicle to someone they have no control over and expose themselves to all sorts of potential problems? If help is needed with paying the premium, just work that out between the two parties and keep control over the insurance yourself and limit your exposure to problems. Having your kid out of state with your vehicle is enough exposure to problems. Bringing a third party that you have no control over into the insurance mix just complicates things and increases your chances of having problems.
