Veggie-burger recommendation for tailgating

Hello, all... I hope I'm posting this on the correct board. Anyway, I and three others are going to be attending the BCS National Championship Game in Pasadena on January 7. I am the host, as I live out here in Southern California; one of the guys that will be flying in for the game has told me he is on a vegetarian kick and thus does not want me to pick him up any hot dogs, steaks, etc like the other guys do. I told him I would try to find a veggie-burger that could be barbecued. Now, the only veggie-burgers that I'm familiar with are the frozen ones from the grocery store that are intended to be microwaved. What does HornFans recommend for this situation? Thanks & hook 'em!

I would ask this dude exactly what he wants instead. Some vegetarians are picky, and some of those boca or morningstar patties have egg or whey in them. Just ask him, so you don't get something he can't or doesn't want to eat, and he doesn't have to be rude and refuse your food.

Or if you are brave look up some recipes for a bean burger, or mushroom burger. Or just grill a huge portabella cap. i make really good sandwhiches with a grilled portabella, slice of grilled egplant and pest sauce, and whatever else.

yeah Doc, I say Portabella and/or eggplant. Also zuchinni or yellow squash brushed with olive oil grills nicely.

Have you been to Mothers Market? It's a hippie vegetarian place. one in Anaheim Hills, so it's a reasonable ride across 91 for you.

bevo barry,
My sister in law is on a veg kick too, and I gave up meat last Lent, when we had a burger party for my daughter's 1st bday. I can't remember what brand I cooked, I think it was Bocca and I did them on the grill. Turned out great. They were just some of the frozen type that you mentioned.
I would ask the guy coming out if he has a favourite brand of the veggie patties, as even Bocca makes about 3 different types. Just ask him his favourite and know they cook pretty fast on the grill.

Yeah, if it has to be a burger, the larger stores probably all have some choices-I'm sure Central Market would have a couple. But portabello mushrooms are an excellent choice, grill well, and taste good for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. You can marinate them in Italian salad dressing or something similar for just an hour, grill 'em up in a few minutes, and everybody's happy.

Tell him to bring what he wants but that he may want his own grill as yours will have meat on it and he may not want meat to faux meat contact. This way he either tells you specifically what he wants or brings it himself.

Question. If you were to go to his place, would he go out of his way to make you burgers or brisket? No? Then screw him and you should not go out of your way.

It should be a two way street. And if being Veggie was so great, why do they try to make their stuff taste like meat? We don't try to get our meat to taste like a vegetable or fofu?
