Hi all,

Planning a trip up to Austin this weekend. My wife is vegetarian, and I am looking for some great places to eat while in town... any suggestions?

Also, what are the best restaurants by the lake or in a romantic spot?? Thanks.

Two good veggie (not vegan) restaurants are owned by the same people:

Mother's
West Lynn Cafe

Last I checked, WLC had some odd hours, so call before you go. Mother's seems to be open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Both places have several menu items in common, but there are differences. WLC is definitely the more "upscale" of the two, though. Its austere, somewhat modern decor puts some people off, but I like it. Mother's caters to your inner hippie.

I don't think Austin has too many places I would consider "romantic", but Green Pastures, Siena and Carmelo's do come to mind. The former features continental "gourmet" fare, and the latter two are both Italian restaurants. For a very nice restuarant by the lake, try the Shoreline Grill near Cesar Chavez (1st) and Congress.

Austin veg for the last 4 years.
here is a good place to check out:The Link

West Lynn isn't half the place it once was. It seems to have fallen off a bit. If you want something fun, try Mr Natural in east austin or on South Lamar. A nicer place would be the New Age cafe, I think its on Exposition and 24th or so. Really good food, the new standard in all veg fine dining, IMO (went on Valentines, might not always be white table cloth, but it was great). Mothers is a standard, nothing amazing, but solid. Sit in the garden. If you want good veg, hit up Veggie Heaven on the Drag. Or the Thai place at 30th and Guad. This being austin, she can go to basically any place and find a real veg option. My fav veg burger is the deep fried veggie burger at Crown & Anchor (near the law school).

Mothers is indeed awesome. Also check out Veggie Heaven on the drag. Good food, good price. A lot of asian stuff but darned good. I suggest trying the Protein 2000. The mushrooms in orange sauce is nice too. But the P2K, I crave it sometimes. I get the jones man.

Veggie Heaven (try nugget island)
Casa de Luz is a one of a kind macrobiotic restaurant
Madras Pavillion (Indian, there are a few other Indian as well)
Mr. Natural (2 locations)

i'd recommend Swad on North Lamar (and Rundberg i think) for veggie Indian grub, much better than Madras Pavillion in my opinion

In addition to the suggestions on this thread, Magnolia and Kerbey Lane both have great vegetarian items on their menus.
