Vegas advice

Going to Vegas for a week. Never been. Anyone want to provide things not to miss? What casinos are best for an Average Joe? We're staying at the Wynn, if that matters in the discussion.

Thanks, ya'll!

Just walk south a block. Between the Venetian, Harrah's and Ceasar's Palace you pretty much have everything you need from the elegant stuff to the shorts and t-shirt crowd stuff. Lots of construction going on down farther south, but you won't have to deal with that as much where you are.

I would recommend dinner at one of the sidewalk restaurants across the street from the Bellagio. The fountain shows are pretty cool.

As to the casinos, I maintain that "Downtown" is much, much better than "the Strip".

The casinos are older and not as flashy, but a better place to gamble, IMHO

They are better from that standpoint, at least if you want to find a lower minimum table - now you do have to be a little more careful on the eating front, but there are some cool things downtown as well.

Here's some advice: Find a sportsbook and put $500 on Texas for a little game they're playing on October 17.

Thanks for the heads-up on some of that stuff, guys. I will check out that Paris breakfast, for sure.

I had assumed the older casinos were where the cheaper tables are.

I'll be doing a heli tour of the Grand Canyon, too. My dad always wanted to go back before he passed. He died on Halloween w/o the chance. The little bro and I will be doing that in his memory. Can't wait.

Gonna drive out to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. Should be fun, even though I can't do the cooler of the 2 tours of the dam. The tunnels won't be handicapped accessible, but I'll get to see the big nuclear reactors, which must be a real sight to see.

And how many points you gonna give me to lay that bet?

If you're gonna play table games like craps, blackjack, and the like, a casino is a casino and the odds are all the same.

If you play slots, the older casinos, like the ones along Freemont Street, might have "looser slots".

That said, I lose my a@@ everytime I go there. Just remember that they couldn't build those magnificent buildings if they lost very often.

Binion's is my favorite casino downtown. Cheap, best women, fast drinks. There is another place across the street (by the strip club) that has $1 fried oreos that are great.

Wynn and Bellagio have the best buffets on the strip in my opinion. You should be able to get a good deal for Wynn/Encore stuff since you're staying there.

If you're looking for some cheap grub, Ellis Island is a block off the strip and has a $6.99 10oz sirloin dinner with a pint of their house brew. It's open 24 hrs a day.

For whatever reason...screwed up tastebuds I guess...I was never a fan of breakfast sausage...until I had some at the Wynn. Wynn's food, whether it be the buffet, the deli, room service, whatever, is the best.

As far as table games go, take 5-10 minutes and learn how to play Pai Gow poker.

Great drinking game in that it is slow moving and most hands end in a tie. You'd have to be awful lucky/unlucky to significantly move your bankroll one way or the other.

If you can get your entire group at a single table, it's a great opportunity to gamble and shoot the **** at the same time.

In N Out Burger and / or Fatburger are a must (and can help zap hangovers).

Drinks at La Fontana Bar in the Bellagio before you do a nice dinner. Have a drink in the shade and enjoy the fountains without the bus fumes.

Fan of the NYNY Roller Coaster.

European pool scenery (this isn't 3:16 - can I say that?)

If you want italian food try Battista's Hole in the Wall just off the strip behind Barbary Coast. Make a reservation if you get a chance. Oh, all the house wine you can drink.

Battista's

imperial palace is actually pretty fun. i remember mariah carey giving me hints at the black jack table. i won $1200 that night. i'm pretty sure she doesn't have the use of her knees anymore.

don't wear jorts with a tucked in sooner tshirt, or any tshirt for that matter with a braided leather belt. just don't.

the new bridge is being constructed at hoover dam to assist the traffic crossing state lines. that will be pretty cool. enjoy the dam tour.

my little brother, sister and i bought my folks a grand canyon heli tour for their anniversary. the video was amazing. you and your brother will really enjoy that and i know your dad will be there with y'all.

As far as games go, your odds are much better off with blacljack. Buy a book and memorize the tables (or download from 'net) of when to hit or hold, and you can almost play even with the house. Add in free drinks and it's not a bad deal. Now if you count cards like one of my friends, you can gain an advantage on the house, but if they catch you, they'll throw you out. I don't think it's worth the effort. It takes too much concentration, and you cannot drink. Better to have just a few and try to play even with the house.

I hate how so many casinos have changed the rules on blackjack over the last 10-15 years to increase the house odds. Especially the big hotel/casinos on the strip. It's hard to find a $5 minimum/stand on all 17s/house pays 3:2 on blackjack table now.

The gaming commission needs to crack down and bring back "real" blackjack, but that'll never happen.
