VCU Preview ... Uh-oh.

OK, I have to admit. I see VCU on the schedule and my immediate thoughts were that of a season opening sweep, extra "beer innings", a good time had by all.

After a quick search of the team, I see we may be in for quite a bit more than that. Take a look :

- Defending CAA Champs ... 37-23.
- Qualified for the post-season in '07 ... 0-2 in the South Carolina regional.
- Return SIX position starters, including 1st baseman Jared Bolden ... member of the 2008 Brooks Wallace POY Watch List.
- Return THREE starting pitchers, notably staff ace Cody Eppley.
- 30 wins in 12 straight seasons.

So, I now think my anticipation level has heightened even more, if it's possible. Should be some quality ball played at The Disch next weekend.

I predict three Kyle Russell HR's. Wind will be blowing in.

I like tough opening weekends. The competition against USD the past few years has been good for the team. Hopefully we'll do better against VCU than USD, though.

And any Kyle Russell HR prediction by Barton Hills is as good as gold in my book. I think its time to add a Jordan Danks "number of stolen bases" prediction as well.

If Kyle gets enough good pitches this season to match his 07 HR total, that bodes very well for what the guys around him in the lineup are doing. Think about having to pitch to Danks, Russell, Moldenhauer, Clark, and Brandon Belt all in a row. That is brutal for oppossing staffs.

So BH, are we DOOOOOMED?

Seriously though, I agree. I'd much rather face quality opposition early in the season, especially now with the condensed schedule. We need to stay sharp to stay ahead of all of those yankee teams who think they're going to even things up.
