The bracket is up. We play UTSA Friday. The other Friday match is UCLA-American. The teams seeded to appear in our regional are #1Florida, #8 Illinois, #9 Texas, #16 Purdue.
i'm fine with being in florida's section of the draw but there are some weird things going on in the bracket. i don't know anything about the rpi but ucla is a very good team and currently ranked right next to the horns at #9, yet they aren't even seeded in the top 16 and we have to potentially meet them in the 2nd round. and purdue isn't even in the top 25 and yet manages a #16 seed. anyway i'm sure others will have comments about the bracket so i'll wait to hear their observations.
How in the world do we get UCLA in the 2nd round??? The #9 ranked team in the nation!!! I don't care if they have a bad RPI or whatever.....any school in the Pac 10 is very dangerous in volleyball for obvious reasons!!!
What is it with the committee and putting us up against UCLA in softball and volleyball
Oh, well....if Texas wants to go deep, they must beat the tough teams!!! Good luck texas!!!!
Sorry, I'm not clear what you are asking. If Florida wins their sub-regional they travel to Austin for the regional. Regional sites are pre-determined. There will be a regional at Gregory whether the Longhorns make it there or not. If you are talking about which team is designated "home" for a particular match, that's a different story.
UCLA is now giving us a run for the money on the injury front. Their top offensive threats for the season are McGraw (428/.255); Kidder (360/.181); and Camp (172/.333). Camp, who was also their best blocker, had a season ending injury some weeks ago. Then Kidder sprained an ankle Tuesday. She didn't start against American, and while she did end up playing all five games, she was ineffective (more errors than kills and obviously hampered). Meanwhile, Amber Roberson showed signs of recovering from her battle with injury. The combination of Kidder's injury and Amber's improvement makes for quite a swing in prospects for the teams. Don't dismiss the Bruins, though. They showed a lot of grit in fighting back to win, and when their backs were to the wall in the fourth game they came out of a TO on fire and dominated AU for a spell.
Very pride of the ladys for fighting tonite. UCLA is a good team. And they had 1 player we could not stop.Looking forward to sending the next round. Godd Job J.F and H.A
Hookem'
who do yall think we start out with setting with next weekend after Hannah's performance tonight? Hannah had the rhythm, but Kocher hasn't lost a match since Hannah's injury.
Michelle really stepped up her game in response to the challenge from Hannah. She had a match for the ages against Nebraska at Gregory. Since then she's had several rough outings, but our team has been strong enough to continue winning while not being seriously challenged.
Here's the thing, though: Michelle is, easily and by far, the best back row player on the team. Let Hannah set and put the black jersey on Michelle, and our 'Horns just might sweep every match right on through the championship.
The black jersey is for the best defensive player who is usually one of the most athletic players on the team, who is quick enough to track and dig up hard-driven balls, and who can pass the ball on serve receive.
Michelle does many things great, but no way can she play Libero at the collegiate level.
Even in tonight's match, she was slow getting under balls that were coming her way as evidenced by the 1 dig she got playing a little over 2 sets vs. 8 digs from Hannah in playing a little over a set and a half.
I still think Kocher should get the start against Illinois, knowing that there is a solid back up ready to take over if needed.
I agree. However, I think Hannah will be back at the helm for all of next season (that's a discussion for a much later time, say.....after we claim the tile in Missouri!)
Simply getting to the ball is meaningless if the ball is then shanked, sent backwards, or over-passed. The NU match at Gregory was televised and DVR'd. Watch it again. Michelle single-handedly prevented that match from going to five when she made incredibly athletic moves to go to the floor in an amazing "split"--not just for generic digs but for great passes that kept our team in system on two of the fiercest attacks we've faced all season. On the last or penultimate point against UTSA she deftly made a great pass on a bomb she took at waist level, again keeping the team in system, not just making a dig that led to a free-ball. Nobody on the team has made any highlight-reel passes remotely comparable to those three by Michelle. We would be a vastly stronger team with her wearing the black jersey.
I am pretty sure with the new crop of 3 talented hitters and 2 hitters returning from injury available to replace only 2 departing seniors, we will be running a 6-2 next year and both of them will be setting. The 6-2 will allow two more hitters to see the court.
"Sorry, I'm not clear what you are asking. If Florida wins their sub-regional they travel to Austin for the regional." _________ Sorry for the vague question. That answers my question. I just assumed #1 Florida had a regional in Gainseville. I also assume Fla was highly ranked prior to the season (higher than us) , so what criteria was used to select Austin over Florida.
The sites are pre-determined before the season even begins. Here's the ncaa chair answering a fan question just days ago should help you as well:
Why are some of the regional finals placed in cities that do not draw the fan support? It seems to make better sense to leave the regional finals in places like Palo Alto, Calif., Omaha, Neb., Austin and Los Angeles.
The committee reviews all bids from schools/cities that choose to bid. When making the decisions on future sites the committee looks at attendance, facilities and providing a great experience for our student-athletes. The committee is conscious of growing the sport by expanding to cities that haven't hosted and bringing great college volleyball to new areas of the country.
The regional (and finals) sites are set several years in advance. Currently they are known through 2014. In the next four years Austin will host one more time (2012). See Future Championship Dates and Sites at ncaa.com.
