Vacation Ideas

So, it looks like we will be able to set aside a modest budget for a family vacation this summer. Now we are starting to try to brainstorm ideas for destinations. I figured it might be helpful to appeal to the collective wisdom and experience of hornfans for more ideas.

So, here are the parameters: Destination(s) must be within reasonable driving distance of the DFW area. We are looking for attractions that will appeal to kids aged 11, 9 and 5. We are looking at a total time of a week or less and our budget will be modest. I would prefer to include educational elements in the mix somewhere.

All right, whattaya got?

We drove to Colorado 2 Summers ago. Whitewater rafted the Arkansas River. Fished the Taylor River near Crested Butte. Fished the Roaring Fork and the Frying Pan river. Went to Glenwood Hot Springs. Camped out in some very beautiful campgrounds. It was very cheap.
As far as education, **** it, they're on vacation

Glenwood has a gondola ride up to some amazing caves. that could very educational.. only about 10 bucks/person IIRC

also, there is a pretty short (but steep) hike up to a place called hanging lake. It is absolutely amazing. Check it out

Reasonable driving distance means we don't spend more than two stright solid days in the car - and I'd like to avoid that much.

MrMyke - That sounds pretty cool. We're not fishers, but I think Colorado sounds appealing. I'd love to get some details on what you did and where you went. Could you PM me?
