UT's rout of Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl

has there been a more over-hyped bowl game performance in Texas history? Why does all the sudden a blow out win over an above average team in a meaningless bowl spark so much optimism about the following season? Because Mack was vocal? Because for one game against a lousy defense and mistake prone offense Texas did what it was supposed to all season? I don't get it, although i'm sure the OU program relishes in the fact that Texas is giddy again and almost content with what has transpired since that game. Did we forget how Texas closed the season last year?

Not trying to stir things up on here too much but I'm getting tired of hearing about that performance and how it changed Mack and the Texas program's mind set. Don't we hear this every year? How now things are going to be different and they're finally going to use Roy Williams's deep play ability or turn the defense loose and blitz like crazy...wait, we've heard that before. Sorry if a touchdown pass to a defensive tackle playing fullback doesn't get me all excited about how things have finally changed. I'm excited about this team and the young talent, but some people are taking that win a bit too far.

OK, i'm done.

Having read almost every thread on this board since that game, I have to say I don't know what in the world you are responding to. The fan base has, at best, guarded optimism. Still, though, it is good to remember how good we looked in our bowl game, since really too little positive feeling has been appreciated about it. (By the way, ASU was a pretty good team.)

It seemed like a lot of people thought we were going to get killed before the game. I think the fact that we killed them caused a lot of people to reevaluate where they thought the program was.

I saw it as some potential if Mack meddles less and lets his coaches coach more. It showed youth developing and as mentioned by somebody above, that we head into the off season upbeat. That is too much to ask for all.

Perhaps because it was the only good game we played last year? Combine that with ou's annual *** whipping in their bowl game and people are back to thinking that we can make it 3 out 4 this year. It is a fairly reasonable assesment.

It always makes fans optimistic when your last game is your best game. That is why they are fans. People were pulling their hair out over us barely beating Iowa the year before. Turns out they were right. We followed that up with a dissappointing season. Now people are more optimistic, maybe they will be right again? No reason for you to be upset about it.

I do not know where you are coming from. Regarding the game, the only thing the national media brings up is Mack Brown's son in law. As for Texas fans in general/hornfans I never hear/read anything about it. On this website the general consensus is we will be good this year and playing for the nc next year. Personally, I think we're going to win it all this year. I think that every year though

Damn dude....with that post bonedry you should fit in good on this site...

I guess a loss would have proved your point better...Take it for what it is and be glad the Horns won.

That Arizona State team sure had a lot of players drafted. We have five and they had five. They had a 2nd rounder and we had a 2nd rounder. Their qb is on the Heisman watch list just like ours. Looks like two comaparble teams to me.

It was encouraging to see what the players could do when playing with emotion and aggression. The team seemed lackadasical for much of ther last season and for me it was refreshing to see a Texas team hungry to kick some ***.

As for the Mack and team mentality, whose to say they haven't changed. I for one think that it probably has. Mack said he changed his attitude and approach when VY was on the sideline and it showed. Instead of getting the tight wad fear of god mentality he was loose and let VY win it his way. Since then I think he got a liitle too lax with the players, but without the VY relaxed style leadership things got sloppy. Now we have brought back offensive and defensive generals (Major and Boom) and I think Mack has cracked down again. No off season bull **** to speak of makes me think that some of the discipline we were lacking last season is back and with a discplined team lots of close games become wins rather than upset loses. That is why I a excited.

I'm guessing that it's no coincidence the first two posts in this thread have less than 25 posts.

Optimism is what springs from bowl wins no matter the opponent. It springs a little more when it is the Pac-10 co-champ that was projected to score on us at will.

As far as there being people here hanging their hat on that game all summer...

Man, I hate to think what b0nedry would have written if we actually LOST the Holiday Bowl!

The original post downplayed our performance against Arizona State, but I think that was arguably our best game of the season. One major difference seemed to be that the best players actually got playing time, rather than the most senior. If we had played A&M and OU the way we played Arizona State, we probably would have won both of those games. Arizona State was a Pac 10 conference co-champion, and we utterly destroyed them.

I think the offseason hires of Muschamp and Applewhite are welcome news. The big question mark will be how much latitude they are given to do their jobs. If the (perceived) tendency to micromanage from the top persists, then we can quite possibly expect more of the same. Otherwise, the sky is the limit.

By and large, I think most people here are realistic about our chances this season. With the youth and lack of experience we have on this team going into this season, we are probably not going to make it through the season undefeated. In fact, some of the gloom and doom predictions have us finishing as low as 5th in the Big XII. To be honest, the expected losses this year would be easier to swallow as long as we look like we actually gave half a **** in the process. The lack of passion and enthusiasm last year was the most maddening part of all.

Confidence breeds confidence.

With the loss of JC and JMike we are still a 2 to 3 loss team....the defense will need to step up big time and hopefully the injury bug will stay away this year.....he has been around the last couple of years.

c'mon guys, admit it, b0nedry is right. Mack is never going to win a National Championship at Texas until he.....oh, wait

It seemed like the first time (post Vince) that we played (and coached) with some real fire. I'm cautiously optimistic that it carries over into this season. We're going to need that all year because our schedule is pretty damn tough.
