Texas will host UT-Pan American Wednesday in the third-annual Texas Two-Step. Come decked out in your best cowboy outfit (jeans, boots, hat and a cool Longhorn denim shirt). Or whatever you think cowboys and cowgirls wear. After starting the season 4-0, including two wins over A&M CC and A&M UK, UTPA has lost the next five. The losing streak started with a 66-116 lost to OU. Texas will be looking to end a two game road trip and extend their 4-0 home winning streak this season.
For the UTPA Broncs, Ce’Monay Newell (# 3, 6-0 Jr. G), Bianca Torre (# 10, 5-5 Soph. G) and Adanna Opara (# 22, 5-11 Jr. G/F) have started all nine games. Erin Lewis (# 15, 5-4 Jr. G) has started seven games while Maria Ben Erlingsdottir (# 32, 6-2 Sr. C) has started 5 games. This group has started the last two games. Donna Jackson (# 24, 5-10 Jr. F) has played in all nine games with four starts. Franchesca Simon (# 12, 5-8 Jr. G) started the first two games but does not appear to have played since. Those six players, excluding Simon, are the only ones averaging in double digit minutes. Including Simon, there are 12 players listed on the roster. 11 have gotten into games. That appears to be a rotation of six, with another four who have played. Amy Watson (# 11, 6-2 Jr. F), LaQuita Garner (# 23, 5-8 Fr. G) and Jasmine Gordon (# 33, 5-10 Soph. F) are the other three that have played in all nine games, although averaging between six and eight minutes. Madison Absher (# 44, 6-7 Fr. C) has gotten into seven games. She is the only other C listed on the Bronc roster. Newell, Torre and Lewis are all averaging over 33 mpg while Opara, Jackson and Erlingsdottir average between 22 and 23 mpg.

Newell (17.3 ppg), Torre (16.9 ppg) and Opara (10.0 ppg) are the three Broncs in double digits. Newell (37-83, 44.6%) and Torre (23-48, 47.9%) are the main UTPA 3pt threats. Erlingsdottir (5-10, 50.0%) is the only other Bronc to take at least 10 shots BTA. Newell (55-127, 43.3%) and Torre (52-112, 46.4%) are the main shooters for UTPA. Those two have taken 43% of the Broncs FG attempts and 78% of the 3s. Newell by herself has taken 49% of the 3s. Jackson (28-48, 58.3%), Torre (25-35, 71.4%) and Opara (12-24. 50.0%) have gotten to the FT line the most for the Broncs. Opara’s 7.4 rpg leads UTPA while Jackson adds 5.6 rpg. Jackson has fouled in a third of the games to date. Lewis leads the team with 65 assists while Torre has 32. Opara and Jackson top UTPA with six blocks each. Torre with 17 steals and Lewis with 14 are the ballhawks for the Broncs.

Texas is led by four players in double figures: Kat’s 16.7 ppg, Ashleigh’s 15.8 ppg, Chassidy’s 15.0 ppg, and Yvonne’s 11.7 ppg. Chelsea adds 8.5 ppg and Ashley 8.2 ppg. Kat and Ashley share the rebounding lead with each averaging 9.5 rpg. Four Horns are in double digits in assists: Yvonne with 21, Ashleigh with 18, Chassidy with 16 and Kat with 12. Ashley is the top shotblocker with 23. Ashleigh leads the way with 27 steals while Yvonne has 15 and Ashley 12. The Horns’ are led in 3pt shooting by Kat (11-32, 34.4%), Chassidy( 8-25, 32.0%), Ashleigh (6-18, 33.3%, Yvonne (7-14, 50.0%), and Chelsea (5-12, 5-12, 41.7%).

Projected Starters:

Texas UTPA

Ashley (6-4) Erlingsdottir (6-2)
Ashleigh (5-8) Lewis (5-4)
Yvonne (5-7) Torre (5-5)
Kat (6-2) Opara (5-11)
Chassidy (5-10) Newell (6-0) [/pre]

The Horns will need to contain Newell and Torre. Those two score about half of the Broncs points per game. Opara provides UTPA with a rebounding presence and provides some inside scoring. Horns should be able to shoot over the smaller Broncs on the perimeter. Other than Newell, they don’t have exceptional size in the backcourt. They will use primarily six players although up to nine are likely to see action. A question is whether their 6-7 post will get in the game and how effective she will be. If the Horns can force UTPA to run, they could tire them out. Horns will need to guard the 3pt line as the Broncs, primarily Newell and Torre, are taking a lot of shots from there. UTPA has played OU, losing 116-66. Torre was the only effective scorer for the Broncs, scoring 26 pts, including 4-6 from BTA. Horns will need to be aware of where she is and not lose her while tracking Newell. I don’t know if the Broncs have faced a shot blocker like Ashley but that may not matter as the 3 is a big part of their arsenal.

This should be a game that allows the Horns to work rebounding, spacing and fast breaks. Look for a storm of 3s in this game as both teams like shooting from BTA. Texas is pretty good but UTPA is shooting lights out from BTA. It will be a good game to see how well the Horns can defend the 3.

The game is at 7 pm Wednesday. KVET 1300 AM will carry the game in the Austin area.

As I understand it, the missed starts and not playing were all due to disciplinary reasons - what those reasons are, I have no clue. I think Tiffany Moore had a concussion in the Mich State game and that is the reason she did not play

Chassidy and Tiffany were suspended for one game each reportedly for actions off the court.

I suspect GG wanted to try something different after the frustrating outcome vs Michigan State. UTPA is fairly short and that to might have influenced the starting lineup change.

Hats off to AT for her triple double and to Chelsea for scoring 29 tonight!! Way to play 11 and 33!

GG said in the post game interview that Tiffany will be suspended for this game and for Tennessee. Chesley(sp) was only suspended for this game. Something about good kids who made a bad choice off the court. AG and Yvonne didn't start because they lost their poise during the Mich. State game. I'm glad she sends strong messages.

Ah OK, then Tiffany was not injured, but suspended. Yep, I like the stern discipline too.
