I've never had the priveledge (for better or worse) of visiting El Paso. I'm planning to make the trip in Sept. Any lodging (hotels and/or locations) suggestions?
The team will most likely stay at the Marriott by the airport. El Paso is easy to get around. The Sun Bowl is about a block from I-10 and Mexico. It's a very unique place to watch a game.
The Marriot by the airport is a nice hotel. There is also a Hilton there. That is where we usually say because you can get to the campus pretty easy from there.
Believe it or not, El Paso is actually a nice place and you will enjoy yourself!
The hotel by the airport is no longer a Hilton. I think its some suites of some sort.
Anywhere by the airport is good and probably on the west side near UTEP though I don't know of any hotels near there so sorry for the lack of value in this post.
Agree on El Paso not being a bad place to visit. Marriott at Airport is good
choice and are several others in that area. With I-10 right there is very
easy to get to stadium. Since UTEP is right off I-10 is easy to get there
from anywhere but not many hotel locations other than airport, nice ones
that is. The downtown one mentioned would be nice.
You would be hard pressed to find a bad Mexican food place in El Paso, but the absolute do not miss is Forti's Mexican Elder. Only thing I have ever had better is Green Chile Stew in Santa Fe, NM. They still make the rocks Margaritas by hand - fresh lime juice. Every plate is excellent.
Since you will have to eat while there this is a must. A bit east of town but well worth the ride. Best steaks anywhere. They have a little zoo and walking trail. Almost a tourist attraction without the meal.

There's also a new Hilton Garden Inn on University Ave. Can't get much closer than this, it's pretty much on campus. FWIW, I happen to love El Paso--of course I'm one of the few you'll meet who does (or will actually admit to it).
I found las cruces to be a little nicer than El Paso. It might not be worth the drive though. A good day trip is to the white sands National Monument. If you are into that sort of thing.
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is the only casino really close to El Paso (by close I mean that Sunland Park is pretty much still EP). It's fairly nice, not too scary. I think the next closest casino (with a golf course) would be Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso.
I'm at Inn of the Mountain Gods right now. It's snowing. Going skiing tomorrow. It's not worth the drive all by itself, though, unless you're going to go skiing or other stuff in Ruidoso. No skiing in September of course, but plenty of hiking/horse riding/golf. About 160 miles from Sun Bowl to Ruidoso.
Driving through El Paso this weekend, both me and my wife noticed that there are a TON of mid-level hotels on the westside. I grew up in EP for awhile, and they were not there then. All around Sunland Park/I-10. That's only a couple of miles from the stadium and a very easy drive. By mid-level I'm talking about the whole Holiday Inn Express/Comfort Suites/Residence Inn level. These hotels are right by the Sunland Park Racetrack/Casino. It's only slots, though. No table games.
The Hilton by the school might be booked by now as the team is staying there. That hotel was booked last season even for crappy games because alot of UTEP alumni that come from out of town stay there.
Agree that anything by the airport is nice. There is a nice Amerisuites about 5 miles east of the school and a new double tree is opening soon next to that amerisuites.
Keep an eye on the Inn of the mountain gods website and Billy the kid casino website. They get some pretty cool concerts. Last week Willie play at Innof the mountain gods. and in the next few months Goerge Thorogood, Charlie Pride, and Ron white are performing. I saw Pat green and KEvin Fowler at billy the kid race track over the last few years.
I live in EL paso so these concert probably arent a big deal to you guys but they are to me. We really dont get **** out here.
It's pretty sad when a small mountain town in New Mexico gets more concerts that a city with a pop. of over 700K.
Needless to say El paso is a nice place to visit, but i cant wait to get the hell out of here.
IF you decide to cross the border, make sure to bring you passport. A new law took effect last tuesday that travelors going into mexico must show their passport to get back in the US.
But hell even if forgot your passpost, sneaking in obviously isnt all that difficult.
If you stay out at the airport, I'd recommend the Radisson Suites Airport. It hosts the basketball teams for the Sun Bowl Basketball Tournament and one of the football teams for the Sun Bowl. Nice place and great staff. It's only 10-15 minutes from UTEP. There are any number of decent mid-level chains on the westside. Look at the ones off of Sunland Park (Sunland Park Holiday Inn or the Comfort Inn are both ok). The Camino has a great bar, but the rooms are run down and it tends to be overpriced. Great location, though.
El Camino is a fine old hotel. The rooms are huge, but a bit dated. The whole thing really needs restoration, but it has more charm than the airport hotels and the rates are reasonable. The hotel bar called "The Dome" is truly beautiful and of historical significance. They are very proud of the bar and I think Esquire or something like that named it one of the great bars of the world.
Cattleman's is way overrated and is way, way out of town and not at all worth the drive. On the other hand, Cafe Central in downtown (accross the street from El Camino) is outstanding, one of the great restaurants of the state. If you are on a boys trip to the game and just want a big steak, this may not be what you want, but if you want to eat the best food in town -- and about as good as 4 stars in any big city, go to Cafe Central. The bar there and the wine list are also top notch (WS Best Award of Excellence).
I'm not from EP, but have to go there for business. A drink at the Dome and dinner at Cafe Central almost make the trip worth it.
To echo the previous posts, the Hilton Garden Inn on the UTEP campus would be ideal, but that might be booked by now. I will be staying with friends, otherwise that is where I would stay. Walking distance to bars and stadium from there.
Again, I second the Camino Real as a good choice. It is downtown and 10 minutes from the Sun Bowl in traffic.
From experience with all of the hotels previously mentioned, all will be fine but those two would be best.
One hotel not mentioned is the Rodeway Inn on Executive Center right off of I-10. Not nice, but not bad. That is where all of my buddies are staying. Right across the street from Prince Machavelli's...
Suggestion for eats on friday night: Ardovino's Desert Crossing in New Mexico. Live music on the patio, great food, great views, nice looking women, it should be fun.
