Me and some buddies will be going to the game. Anybody got any good advice on places to go and bars in El Paso.Tailgating? Where to stay? Do they sell beer in the Sun Bowl? Gracias

Nothing good can come from playing this game. Deloss makes few bonehead mistakes, this was one. Play the service acadamies; great trips for the fans and team. Playing Army in late September on the Hudson Shore outnumbering thier fabs 10-1. Site see in the City a few days before going up to West Point. Now THAT is a road trip.

Just be careful in Juarez. The border ain't the paradise it once was -- it's gotten downright unsafe in many areas. Don't cancel your trip, but be vigilant.

-Stay the hell away from Juarez at night. There's nothing for you there, unless you're underage and / or just looking for trouble.
-There's somewhat of a bar district by campus, near the Sun Bowl. Just find Cincinnati Street and Mesa and bar-hop from there.
-Aceitunas on Doniphan Street is not all that close to campus, but is a good place to have some drinks on an outdoor patio. Erin's on N. MEsa is good for that too.
-If you want to have some really good, non-turista, Mexican food, go to Amigo's Restaurant on Montana.
-If you want to have a little day trip and top it off with some really good mexican food, go to Chope's in La Mesa NM. Get the Rellenos or green enchiladas. And a pitcher or 2 of beer to wash them down with. Depending on how "warm"the chile crop was last year, you could need the extra pitcher.

ok heres the scoop on EP....

Cincinatti Street is probably the best place to party on the weekend, but many of the bars have dress codes, i.e. no hats, tennis shoes, things like that, i dont know how much that will be enforced with the influx of fans though. It is definitely a younger crowd on the average night also.

Tailgating - This is where El Paso will show off in my opinion. Though the university has recently tightened up the rules a bit, tailgating actually takes place all over the actual campus. I grew up in El Paso, so I may be biased, but in my opinion it is one of the best tailgating cities in the country, and probably the best in the state. Much of the city will come just to tailgate, its one great huge party, and puts tailgating in Austin to shame. Texas fans will get to see a real tailgating experience...p.s. you can park your RV or Trailer on campus, but definitely check out UTEPs tailgating rules.

Where to stay - anywhere on the west side or in the downtown area is going to be close to campus. While the downtown is being revitalized, there is still not that much to do there, save for a few clubs and bars.

Places to eat - Chope's was a good suggestion, as is La posta in old mesilla as well...but those are a half hour drive. in town try leo's, avila's, michelino's, or if youre looking fancy the dome in camino real hotel, or cafe central..both downtown. another good spot is L&J cafe, theyve won plenty of stuff in texas monthly.

Juarez - my suggestion is stay the hell out. theyve had all kinds of problems lately, namely murders by the hundreds. and i mean since january 1st. better to just stay away, even the underage kids dont really even go there anymore, its changed since i was in high school only 10 years ago.

I'm pretty adventuresome and love to take risks, but after the things I've heard and the article I read in GQ this month (see here) I'm staying stateside during the El Paso trip.

How's the Camino Real hotel? I've read recent mixed reviews as far as the rooms and service go. As for the location, any decent food and/or drink (besides the hotel facilities) within walking distance?

This is going to be a great road trip and many of you will really like El Paso. I suggest looking up the restaurant Geo Geske, or also called G2. VERY good food that isn't to far from the campus. They also have another restaurant that I think they call Geske Fire Grill or something like that, which is excellent as well.

If you are up for a 45 minute drive, one way, there is a place out in the middle of nowhere call The Cattleman that has live buffalo, deer, longhorns, etc. They also serve a VERY good steak. If your family is with you I strongly reccomend.

There is also a mexican food restaurant there that is literally a hole in the wall that I cannot remember the name of but I go there everytime I go to El Paso, (we call it by the owners name, but it is really named after his daughter), if you are interested in some serious mexican food that is cheap then PM me and I will get you the info. It is UNBELIEVABLE. Owner does the cooking.

In fact, if anyone has some questions let me know. I know El Paso pretty well.

I used to live there in the early 90's.

If Kiki's Restaurant is still there, (which it should be) it has some of the greatest (and hottest) mexican food evar. Hole in the wall place but pure awesomeness.

A few quick recs., just plug them into your GPS:

*Good Coffee- great breakfast (810 N. Piedras St.
*L & J Cafe- great mexican food (3622 E. Missouri Ave- across from the cemetary)
*Lucy's (inside King's X)- great breakfast & mexican food, I recomend the machaca! (4119 N. Mesa Ave.)
*Chico's Taco- various locations- for those strong of stomach! I recommend a double order with extra cheese & an order of fries to sop up the remaining juice!

There are a few bars on & around Cincinnati Ave.- near campus & Sunbowl Stadium. There are also a few bars downtown, around the Camino Real Hotel & Cafe Central.

Catlemen's Steakhouse- (915) 544-3200 (Approximately 35 minutes from Downtown El Paso. Take Interstate 10 east, make a left turn at Fabens Exit 49, go 5 miles north into the desert.)

Do not advise going to Juarez at night.

A lifetime ago, when my aunt was a prof there, we used to head to a good Mexican food joint, with a better bar out in the boonies (may have been in New Mexico) that was themed on "Casablanca" and had a fun atmosphere. Army and German military personnel (training at Bliss/ White Sands) were plentiful and gave it a more cosmopolitan flavor.

It seems like it was out past the horse track but I was pretty drunk everytime I was out there so I really can't remember the specifics...anyone know the place I'm talking about?

Don't go to Juarez, period. Not worth it.

Cincinnati bars are close to campus and pretty good. Club 101 and Ice Bar down Mesa Street are also good. Aceitunas ("Tunas" to the locals) on Doniphan is a great singles bar and should be high on your list. I'd also recommend having a beer at Rosa's Cantina, which is about 2 miles down Doniphan from Tunas. Allegedly where Marty Robbins came up with the song "El Paso." The Dome Bar at the Camino Real is beautiful. Otherwise, downtown EP ... sucks.

Restaurants other than mexican food (no particular order):
Dane's Steakhouse (cincinnati area)
G2 (ditto)
2900 (across from the Haskins Center - real expensive and a little foofoo, real good bar, though)
Ardovino's Desert Crossing (best atmosphere by far, my personal favorite)
Great American on Alabama Street (great steak)
Cattleman's (but it's a long f'ing drive. Not sure it's worth it)
Chope's (good chance you'll get lost. PM me if you want directions. One of those places you just have to go to. Try and have a designated driver. You'll need it after a couple of 40's)

Mexican (my personal favorites)
Riviera (next to Tuna's and has a good bar, too)
Kiki's
L&J
Lucy's
Avila's

Stay somewhere on the westside.

PM with questions.
