UTA comes to town for the midweek game sporting a 16-20 record

This could be the reason along with a short week (TCU series starts Thursday) that freshman righty Blake Goins is getting the start against junior lefty Zach Hobbs.

Goins is 1-0 on the year with a 2.79 era while Hobbs is 3-0 and 2.55.

Schiraldi may be needed for the conference series and this is not a big RPI game for Texas
 
Derek Miller the UTA centerfielder leads off against the righty Goins as the game begins.

Miller steps in right handed and is hit by a pitch to reach first.

Brady Cox, the Mav first baseman also bats righty and tries to bunt the runner over, but fouls two off.
Then some high heat is swung through for one away.

Matt Shortall, the DH and a big slugger for the Mavs lines one right at Gurwitz for two away.

Greg McCall, the catcher bats with two down and a runner at first and his grounder is nabbed right on top of the bag by Clemens to retire the side.

UTA gets a man on, but no more.
Texas comes to bat looking to break into the scoring column.
 
Marlow leads off against the lefty Hobbs as the Texas first starts.

He flies one to dead center and it's caught for one away.

Johnson steps in right handed and he lays down a bunt that the pitcher fields and gets him 1-3 for two down.

Payton bats with the bases clear and two away.
He walks to make to make on base reach 77 games now.

Barrera comes up as Payton leads from first.
He grounds to short and the shortstop goes the short way 6-4 to end the inning.

Both teams get a runner on and neither score after one.
 
Goins faces Ryan Bottger playing left field in the game as the second begins.

He lines a single to left for the first hit of the game and for the second time the Mavs have their lead man on first.

John Twichell, in right bats lefty and the count runs full.
A wide one puts two runners on and nobody out.

Goins can be wild and he needs to settle down as Eric Tate the third baseman for UTA steps in from the right side.

A 2-0 count brings Skip to the mound and their is activity in the Texas pen.

Two more not even close loads the bases and here comes Skip to get Goins.
 
The new Horn pitcher is tall right Chad Hollingsworth and he comes in as bad a situation as a hurler can have.

The bases loaded and nobody down as he faces lefty hitter Darien McLemore.
A ground ball goes to first and the decision by Clemens is to just take it to the bag as a run scores.

It's 1-0 UTA with runners at second and third and one down.

The shortstop Travis Sibley bats right handed and with the infield back he can double the Mav advantage with a ground ball.

The safety squeeze is on and the bunt goes back to Hollingsworth who gets the runner at third in a rundown.
The 1-5-3 put out is two down.

Runners on first and second and two down for Miller at the top of the order.

He pops up to Marlow as Hollingsworth does a good job of limitting the damage.

UTA gets one and to the bottom of two they lead 1-0.
 
Shaw leads off the Texas second against the lefty Hobbs who has a newly minted 1-0 lead.

He shoots a grounder up the middle by the second baseman's outreached glove for Texas's first hit to reach.

Hinoosa up bunts him over on the sac for one away.

Felts also bunts, but trying for a hit.
He can't get it by the pitcher and that's not what you really want by your DH as the pitchers goes 1-3 for two away.

Carter is still hurting is seems and not playing.
Felts is being lectured in the dugout.

Clemens bats lefty with Shaw at third on the bunt play.
His swinging K, fooled by a slow curve retires the side.

Two innings played now and UTA leads 1-0.
 
Hollingsworth faces Cox as the third starts and he chops one to third on the first pitch for one away.

The big DH Shortall is back again and he again goes to Gurwitz, this time on the ground and the 5-3 out is made for two down.

McCall bats once more left handed and with two down and nobody on he flies out to left to retire the side in order.

Bottom of the third comes and UTA leads 1-0.
 
Hobbs starts his third inning of work by facing nine hole hitting Gurwitz, the Horn third sacker.

He steps in right handed and he grounds one up the middle for a hit against the soft tossing left hander.

Marlow up and he as expected bunts the runner over for a sac.
Johnson is up with the first chance to tie the game barring a double play.

He rips a a laser to left and it goes into the bullpen for a two run homer and it gives Texas a 2-1 lead.

That brings Payton up agains with the base clear and one down.
He grounds one behind the bag at first that is taken to the bag by the first baseman for two away.

Barrera up with two down and a clean base path.
He works a full count and then the walk on a low pitch.

One on for Shaw now with two outs.
A very slow curve with an 0-2 count hits Shaw on the lead arm and it puts two on.

This brings a visit by the head coach for the Mavericks.
He returns to the third base dugout.

Hinojosa stands in from the right side as runners lead from second and first with two away.

A hanging curve is not missed and C.J. lashes it to left for a double toward the line.

Another run scores and now runners are at second and third with still two down.

That's all for Hobbs as the Texas lead is 3-1.
 
Jess Amedee, a right hander is the UTA pitcher and he faces Felts with runners at second and third and two down.

He K's looking to retire the side.

Texas takes the lead after three innings with Johnson's jolt the big blow to make it 3-1 Texas.
 
Hollingsworth faces Bottger leading off the UTA fourth.

He lines one right to short for one away.

Twichell also hits the first pitcn and sends one to center that is caught by Payton for two down.

Tate bats right handed and his foul pop is squeezed by Clemens to retire the side as nine in a row have been retired by Hollingsworth.

Bottom of the fourth at the Disch and Texas leads 3-1.

Gurwitz lays down the bunt and the throw by the pitcher goes into center.

The centerfielder goes to third with a throw and is late as Gurwitz takes second.

Marlow up at the top of the order K's swinging for one away.

Johnson gets another rbi grounding one threw a drawn in infield for a single

That is all for Amedee as Texas takes a 4-1 lead
 
The new pitcher for UTA is Keegan Hucul, a lefty in to face Payton.

Mark draws his second walk of the night to load the bases.

That brings Barrera up with one down and a chance to break this game wide open.
The count runs full and a low pitch brings home another run on the second consecutive base on balls.

Texas now ahead 5-1 and the bases still loaded.

Shaw up with one down and he lines one to center deep enough for the SF that makes it 6-1.

Runners at second and first and now two away for Hinojosa and a snap throw by the catcher to first was just late on Barrera.

A ground ball to short goes 6-4 to end the inning and more damage.

Texas put things in a more comfortable position for a win with a 6-1 lead after four innings.
 
Hollingsworth did a great job of restoring order for Texas and his day is done now.

Josh Sawyer, a left hander comes in as Texas continues to try and get some people some work that hasn't been on the mound in a game situation lately.

He faces McLemore to lead off the Mav fifth.
A ground ball to short is a quick one out.

Sibley, at the bottom of the Maverick order bats righty against the lefty Sawyer with one away.

He takes an outsid fast ball over Clemens head and down the right field line for a double.

Miller, the Moving Mavs lead off hitter grounds a single up the middle that plates Sibley to make it 6-2.

Cox stands in from the right side with one on and one down.
A squibberf goes toward short that is cut off by Gurwitz.
He bobbles and loses control of it and the error puts two on with one down.

Runners at second and first for the hard hittig DH Shortall.
He has hit the ball hard twice, but is 0-2.
This time Saywer in a big situation just plays some good old country hard ball and blows a high heater past him for two away.

McCall bats lefty and his pop to shallow center is an out that retires the side and leaves the damage at only one run.

Halfway through the game and Texas now leads 6-2.
 
The bottom of the fifth starts as we wave hello to FW's daughter.

Hucul is still on the hill facing Felts to lead off for Texas.
He K's once again looking this time for one down.

Clemens bats lefty and he pops to short for two away.

Gurwitz puts a charge into one to left, but right at the left fielder who for some reason decides to make a sliding catch instead of just running through the ball.

It retires the side in order and to the bottom of the sixth we go and Texas leads 6-2.
 
Sawyer still works for the Horns as the sixth begins for UTA.

He faces Bottger batting right handed and his ground ball heads for the hole. A backhanded attempt is not made by HInojosa and it's an infield single.

One on for left handed hitting Twichell and he walks on four pitches to put two on and that will get Sawyer out of the game as Skip has seen enough.
 
The Texas pitcher is another left hander in Ty Culbreth.

He has runners at first and second and no outs and Texas ahead 6-2.

He is another Horn pitcher that needs work.

His first batter to face is right hander Tate.
He hits one on the screws, but right at Johnson in left for one down as the runners hold.

McLemore bats righty with still two on and one down.
He hits a hump back liner to Hinojosa and he catches he runner at second off the bag and its a 6U-4 double play that ends the threat on the base running error by UTA.

Bottom of the sixth on the way with Texas on top 6-2.
 
Hucul faces Marlow at the top of the Horn order in the Texas sixth.

He chops one to third on one big hop and the 5-3 out is recorded for one away.

Johnson, who has had a big night steps in and is HBP to reach.

Payton bats as Johnson steals second as the throw attempt is muffed and the ball falls behind him.

Payton stands back in from the left side with a chance to get an rbi.
His chance is even better as a balk is called on Hucul and it sends Johnson to third.

Payton walks for the third time in the game to put runners on the corners and send Hucul to the showers
 
The new Mav chunker is right hander Jacob Moreland and his first batter to face is Barrera.

Tres steps in with runners on the corners and one down.
Moreland with an almost submarine delivery sends one by the catcher for a wild pitch to score Johnson and move Payton to second.

Texas leads now 7-2 as Barrera still bats.
A full count is reached and a scalded liner to left is a single asd Payton holds at third.

Runners again on the corners now and one down for Shaw.
The lefty hitter grounds one to first and the first baseman tags the bag and fires to second for the 3U-6 double play to retire the side.

We go to the seventh with Texas now leading 7-2.
 
Culbreth out for the Mav seventh faces nine hole hitter Sibley.

He grounds one on the right side that Marlow dives and grabs in the hole, but he can't make the throw and it's an infield hit.

Miller at at the top of the order bats again and grounds to Marlow in front of second base and he makes the play as the runner goes to second for one away.

Cox bats right handed and another grounder to second is out two.

The DH bats in Shorthall and he pops out to Marlow as he makes all the outs in the inning.

Stretch time in Austin and Texas leads 7-2.
 
Hinojosa leads off the Horn seventh against the righty pitching Moreland.

He lofts a fly ball to medium left center for one away.

Felts bats again not having a good game at DH with two K's.
His ground ball to second still leaves him with a collar as there is two away.

Clemens grounds to short and the 6-3 retires the side in order.

Seven in the books and Texas leads 7-2.
 
The eighth starts with Culbreth facing McCall and his grounder to third is one down.

Bottger bats right handed and grounds one through the legs of Culbreth and it's fielded by Hinojosa on the second base side. He does a 360 and the ump says out by an eyelash for two away.

The replay says otherwise, but hey the game is dragging.

Twichell up and he K's looking to retire the side in order again.

Bottom of the eighth comes and Texas still in command of this one 7-2.
 
Colin Tornburg is another Mav pitcher in the eighth and he faces Gurwitz.

He grounds one to short that is booted for an error to reach first.

Marlow brings the top of the order one more time.
He flies out to shallow center for one down.

Johnnson, with three rbi's on the night bats right handed with Gurwitz at first and one down.

Gurwitz steals second as the catcher tries to throw out of the crouch and one hops it.

The count runs full on Johnson and he walks to put two aboard.

Payton bats with one down and now two aboard at first and second.
The count runs full and he walks for the fourth time tonight.

It loads the bases and gets Moreland out of the games.
 
The game slows to a crawl as new Mav pitcher TJ Whidby, a
right hander comes in.

Barrera bats and the bases loaded with Horns and one down.
A liner to left that the left fielder tries to make a sliding backhanded stab that he misses.

The ball rolls to the fence and it's traffic jam of Horns meeting at home plate.

Three runs score and Barrera stands at third with a triple.

That makes it 10-2 Texas.

Shaw bats with Barrera at third and one down.
His fly ball to left is caught for two away as Barrera held at third.

Hinojosa bats with two away and a runner at thrd.

He sends a flair to center that the centerfielder does make a diving catch on to end the inning.

The ninth is finally here mercifully and Texas in total control 10-2.
 
Justin Peters a tall right hander looking for some work will pitch the ninth for Texas.

He faces Tate leading off the inning for UTA.
He lines one off Gurwitz's glove and on by him for a lead single.

McLemore bats left against Peters as he is a switch hitter.
He skies one high to right to Shaw for one down.

TJ Hillman is a pinch hitter for UTA for Sibley with one away and a runner at first.
He tops one to first and Clemens fields and a quick flip to first is dropped by Peters for an error.

That puts two on for another pinch hitter Brandon Vinyard with one away.

He watches the grapes grow as he takes a curver right down Congress for two away.

The trifecta of pinch hitters is Jackson Morris a lefty swinger.
He lines one in the hole that Hinojosa dives and makes the catch sprawling.

That puts this one to bed at last, much like FW's daughter by now probably.

Texas gets it's 30th win of the season as expected.
They get some work for some pitcher's that needed it and continue the momentum as TCU comes calling next.

Remember that series starts Thursday due to Easter.

It sure looks like the Horns are in a groove and ready for those Horn Frogs.

Great time at the Disch on Tuesday night.

Thin crowd (LHN on a cool Tuesday night appeared to take its toll), but a fun time in any case.
