UT vs Stanford

They're callin it the "Tangle at Maple"!!! jk.

The Cardinal are averaging 72ppg to TX 77ppg. All the other stat lines are pretty much a push.

Marginal advantage to the Stanford back cour: They're going to draw a lot of fouls (1/4 of their ppg comes from the line). They're going to pose a mismatch for us and could put us into foul trouble. Maples should be loud and proud. Huge advantage goes to the Texas front court: We'll dominate the paint and the boards. We have much more consistent offensive talent overall, and better potential for big contributions off the bench.

The Cardinal are going to come out pumped. They're going to get to the line a bunch and play one good half of basketball, but someone (I'm calling Roach) is going to go off and be the difference maker for Texas.

2014 OT loss avenged. Hook em.

Javan Felix has made 24 three-pointers.
Most by a Longhorn in the first 10 games of a season since AJ Abrams.

Damn near blew it at the end. Taylor really carried the team in spite of the brain farts by Felix and Davis.

I wouldn't say they damn near blew it. They led wire to wire. Stanford is a good basketball team. We knew Felix was going to get shut down. Taylor did his thing. We dominated the paint. That's our game. Shaka got some good minutes off the bench and everybody did their job. Hopefully this type of mismatch gave him some teaching points and we learned how to offset this kind of backcourt size. We should crack the top #25.

Not sure this team cracks the top 25 just yet, and I'm 100% ok with that. This program always seems to perform better when under the radar rather than with large expectations.

This Stanford team, though, is NOT good. Nowhere near the team we saw in December last year, and that Stanford team didn't even make the NCAA tournament. Texas played good basketball tonight, but made some really costly bonehead mistakes that you didn't see against North Carolina or the end of App st.

Anyways, good resolve to come out with that one in the end. No game until Dec. 29 against UConn, another good test at home. These players deserve a good rest for the holidays, so 8 days off should be good for them :hookem:

Not top 25 til we beat U Conn. Good win though. Thank goodness for upperclassmen. I love how shaka lets them play through their mistakes. While they're still learning to play shakaball together, a few more games and I start holding them more responsible.... looking forward to uconn game. :bevo:

on to the next one...

This team is still finding itself and there will be some ugly performances along with the good ones. Playing in a stacked Big XII that could and should get at least 6 teams in the tournament will test this team a lot. Sitting at 8-3 with a home game against UCONN is a good position for this team to be in as they end out of conference play. They should continue to improve and I like what Smart is doing with his substitutions and trusting his players something Barnes in his last few seasons seemed to have lost.

This. ^
I think its fairly remarkable that with all the freshmen and Cleare (sp) playing plenty of meaningful minutes, and all learning a very different new system that the team has won as many games as they have, and especially against quality opposition.

This was a quality win against a good shooting Stanford team.

Just rewatched replay of game. A few additional observations.

While loss of Felix to foul trouble could have really hurt, freshmen did a good job shooting 3s to pick up slack. Taylor was awesome. Last shot was incredible. He killed Stanford all game long. Stanford's attendance was horrible. That helped Texas because their home court advantage was minimized. Actually freshmen and upperclassmen equally made boneheaded plays during last 8 minutes to keep Stanford in game. So my original thought that freshmen mistakes were bigger cause is retracted.

I stated in an early post this team is going to be a tough out by conference play. I'm doubling down on that prediction. Taylor and the seniors are talented and are going to provide some solid leadership. The freshmen are getting better each game. Both Roach and Mack are catching up with Davis and I think all 3 are going to be big contributors in conference play. :bevo:

Texas was wreaking "havok" on Stanford, exploiting their lack of quickness, with the press.

Then as been the case all season, the fouls mount up and the press was mostly shelved. Wish the Horns could cut down on the fouling, all the free throws by the opposition has really hurt, along with getting in foul trouble nearly every game.

The three pointers have hurt too, seems like lots of teams really shoot them well against us. Texas collapses on the ball and leaves a shooter open, they seem to knock it down, fairly regularly.

Like the make up of this team, wish we had a capable back up for Ridley. Shaka is out there doing well on the recruiting trail and getting in his type of players. I wonder if he wants true post players in the future or kind of tweeners of the 4-5 position.

Yeah, me too. Ibeh used to be a fairly effective defensive stopper in the paint. But not this year so much. The new rules, calling the fouls much closer has hurt Ibeh more than any other Horn, IMHO. In fact, the close foul calling this year hurts pressing teams like Shaka's who are getting called for "touch" fouls while wreaking Havoc. :)

^^This.

NCAA instituted 30 rules changes for men's basketball this season. Every team is feeling the effects of these changes and coaches are having to adjust. Games are just getting called tighter, which is getting certain teams to the line sooner and more often. Plain and simple. This group will settle down I think and improve on the fouling.

I really think you are correct. Plus, I think our free throw shooting will improve a little bit as the season progresses. Just a modest improvement in FT shooting translates into 5 or 10 points a game. That will be huge.

I wouldn't say you are the grammar police either. But I would say you are the spelling police. And rightly so. You are correct sir. Edit will appear shortly.

I gladly accept correction when I have erred. Sadly, that happens more and more these days. :)

That was as good as I've seen him look ever from start to finish.

I'm pretty sure that Taylor's 20-something relatives outyelled the Stanford crowd. Sounded like a pretty neutral site for the most part. Always fun hearing the "TEXAS-FIGHT" chant in an opposing arena.
