Texas pulled off a 58-55 shocker at Waco on 02-01-09 to stop a two game losing streak and start a five game winning streak. In the process, they handed Baylor their second loss in a row. On Saturday, the Horns will attempt to sweep Baylor and continue a winning streak they started against Missouri on Tuesday. Actually, both teams seek to gain a second win in a row. Texas has won once after a two game losing streak. Baylor beat Tech after losing to OU. Coach G is three of four against Baylor since taking over the reins at Texas.

That Baylor game was the one where Coach G made the much publicized move to start Ashleigh and Gayle. Baylor was coming off a loss to OU and also made a change in their lineup, replacing Rachel Allison (# 14, 6-1 Sr. F)who had been struggling with Morghan Medlock (# 6-1 Jr. F). That was the first lineup in Big 12 play for the Lady Bears, but not the last. Over the three games, the lineup changed twice, ending up the same lineup that started conference play. That lineup has been good for an 8-2 record in conference play. Overall, Baylor is second in the league with a 10-3 record. The three losses have be to OU (twice) and to Texas.

Baylor is led by three players in the top 30 in league play: Danielle Wilson (# 11, 6-3 P, 15.8 ppg), Jessica Morrow (# 3, 6-0 Sr. G/F, 12.0 ppg) and Jhasmin Player (# 15, 5-10 Fr. G, 10.5 ppg). Those three are also the only ones to have started every conference game. Allison and Kelli Griffin (# 21, 5-8 Soph. G) have started the last four. Allison has started 6 other Big 12 games and Griffin seven others. Wilson dominates the paint for the Lady Bears, ranking first on the team and second in Big 12 play with 11.2 rpg. Wilson also ranks first in league play with 3.15 bpg. She is fifth in the league in FG% at 47.6%. Griffin leads the team in several categories: assists (3.2 apg); FT% (80.4%); and A/TO ratio at 1.3. Morrow is tops in 3pt FG% at 33.3% and in number of 3s made per game at 1.5. As a team, Baylor is sixth in the conference in steals with no Lady Bear in the top 15 in steals.

Brit’s 31 point outburst against Missouri left her with a team leading 12.8 ppg. Kat found her stroke, making two 3s and scoring 10 pts, keeping her average at 10.5 ppg. They are the only two Horns scoring in double figures in conference play. But the Horns have four players averaging between 6.2 and 8.3 ppg. Brit (144), Kat (101), Ashleigh (87), Carla (85), Lindsey (83) and Erika (83)have all taken at least 83 shots in Big 12 play. While Brit and Kat are the usual focus of opponents’ defense, the other four have stepped up in the Horns’ wins. Kat (20-56, 35.7%), Brit (15-47, 31.9%) and Erika (10-38, 26.3%) are the most likely to pull the trigger from BTA. Ashleigh (9-18, 50%) and Carla (6-18, 33.3%) are the only other Horns that have taken at least 10 3s in conference play. Eight Horns have gotten to the FT line between 17 and 50 times. Kat (35-42, 83.3%), (13-17, 76.5%) and Brit (38-50, 76.0%)are the top marksmen from the FT line. Kat continues to just about double up on the next best rebounder with a team best 6.7 rpg. Five others average between 3.8 and 3.5 rpg. Carla’s 60 assists lead the team by 39 over Ashleigh’s second best 21 assists. Lindsey has 27 blocks, 10 more than Gayle. Kat with 6 blocks is third best on the team. Ashleigh’s 22 steals lead four others in double digit steals. Three others have 9 steals.

SCORE BY PERIODS: 1st 2nd OT Total
------------------------- ---- ---- -- -----
Texas.................... 415 444 - 859
Baylor................... 430 428 6 - 864

Texas started a new lineup against Missouri, starting Earnie and Lindsey in place of Kat and Gayle. Both Lindsey and Kat ended up with 10 pts. I will assume that this is the lineup that will start for the Horns. That will have Brit, Earnie, Carla, Lindsey and Ashleigh going up against Player, Wilson, Allison, Morrow and Griffin. Some matchups are pretty obvious, at least to start off with: Griffin-Carla; Morrow-Brit; Player-Ashleigh. I would think Earnie would start off on Allison but with her strength, maybe Earnie will start off on Wilson. The Horns did a great job moving Wilson out of her comfort zone in the first game.

With Wilson, Allison , Player and Medlock, Baylor likes to score inside. The Horns will need a strong defensive game inside from Lindsey and Gayle. In the first game. those two only played 14 and 13 minutes, respectively. Kristen, Earnie and Kat stepped up big inside.

In the first half, the score was 24-21 Baylor. Halftime stats: FGs-Texas 10-31 (32.3%), Baylor 10-32 (31.3%); 3s-Texas 1-4 (25%), Baylor 1-4 (25%), FTs Texas 0-0. Baylor 3-9. The final margin was a 58-55 win with Baylor missing a last second shot to tie. Looking at the conference stats, there’s not a lot to help pick one team over the other. In FG% D, Baylor has a slight edge, 36% to 39.3%. In protecting the arc, Baylor has an even smaller margin—29.7% to 29.9%. The Horns do have a significant margin in getting steals—averaging 8.3 spg to Baylor’s 6.9 spg. A missed 3pter with one second left was the margin of victory for the Horns. Morrow had ten pts but was only 4-14 from the field. Wilson had 18 but was 7-20 from the field and 4-11 from the FT line. Player was an outstanding 71.5% from the field but only took seven shots. The Horns countered with Carla and Kat with 11 pts and Ashleigh and Brit with 9 pts apiece. Neither team shot well from either the field or from BTA. Where Texas really shined was at the FT line, hitting 11-15. But Baylor made up for that in quantity, making 13-26. This game should be another battle royal.

7345 showed up to watch that game in Waco. I have hopes that we will get close to that. For sure, a number of Baylor fans are likely to make that short trip on I35 to Austin to come see if the Lady Bears can grab a win in Austin. Without TV and with a nice day, there could be an awful lot of green and gold in the FEC.

Strange, every game on Saturday will be on regional TV of some sort except for this one. One would have thought that this would be a natural for FoxSports in the Austin-Waco area. You can listen to it on KVET 1300AM. The Texassports preview has been linked in an earlier post by jusme828.

We definitely need this game to be huge for Ashley and AG. Stay out of foul trouble, and keep Wilson OFF the boards. I think rebounds should be the key to the game. Earnie and Kat should also be an asset to winning this battle.
I hope the Horns come out with the passion to take the next 3 games...i know they are capable!!!

i think you're right bab, there will probably be some green and gold in the crowd for the game, especially since it's not on tv....which i agree is strange, because Fox Sports is good about showing the weekend Big 12 games.

hopefully there will be a great longhorn crowd there. we need to support the horns in their last 2 homes games. it's crazy how fast this season has flown by!

hookem.gif
let's go horns! beat the bears! stopping their inside game was key in our first win this year. i think Baylor's post players were a combined 7-34 shooting...something close to that. and i believe the 7 made shots were all from Wilson. need to keep them off the boards as well.

Okay, this Saturday will work just fine. Watch WBB vs Baylor at the FEC at 2pm. Hustle home and catch the MBB game vs OSU at 5pm on ESPN!!

I really thought we would win this one. Oh, well...and those darn free throws! If we make them, we win!

Bring on KSU!

Horns did show some fight today. Tough break....i knew BU would come out in the 2nd half determined to win for Wilson. Here's to hoping she's okay!

Wilson hurt her knee...looked pretty bad. Baylorfans are saying she's out for the season, but, it's not definite yet. Man, i hate that for her!

missed free throws and lay-ups...and i don't even know how many traveling calls. i lost count. this team frustrates the heck out of me sometimes. at least we were able to make a game of it in the 2nd half. it really sucks when both Erika and Kat are having off games.

and seriously, why does the ticket office stick Baylor fans in the middle of UT sections? i mean, most were perfectly nice and courteous fans. but this one girl near us stood up every time they scored and did the 'ahh sick em bears' cheer. i was over it after about 5 minutes.

haven't heard anything about Wilson, but it looked like the trainers were doing the ACL test on the knee while she was down, which isn't a good sign. hopefully it won't be the ACL though.

I'm feeling a bit generous to the team today.

Let's take into account that we had a freshman (AT) in the game playing her heart out drawing fouls. She was only 3 of 8 from the line, which had she made them all, the stat line would've read 18-22. I'm sorry, but she's a freshman. She'll get better at the line.....she's doing a heck of a lot for this team, and she can't do it ALL!!!
rant.gif

Okay, i'm done with that. sorry.

i love AT's game. she's everywhere, i can't say enough good things about her. the free throws, though, are definitely the one weak spot. but i'm sure she works on them in practice, and hopefully she'll continue to improve.

also gotta give props to Ashley Lindsey today. she was all over the boards. 16 points and 16 rebounds (7 offensive). nice game.

Ashley definitely had a tremendous game today. Not much more she could've done on her part. Not sure what was with Erika and Kat today. Looks like Kat's sophomore slump is coming late in the season....which stinks!!!

From what I saw when the Horns were on offense on my end, they were on Kat like white on rice. She wasn't getting any open looks and every Horn that drove had LB hands slapping at the ball. They stripped it out several times.

BabHorn....i saw the same thing on Kat. Coach Valley should work with Kat on finding a way to fake that 3-point shot and drive the lane...without the traveling (if it really was). I remember at least 3 traveling calls on her for that...don't know if there were more than that, but it seemed to be a problem for her today. Was it just the refs??? Was it just BU's defense??? Don't know, but, it should be addressed.

I think, and I haven't watched any tape to check this, she establishes her pivot foot when she gets the ball, then starts off with her pivot foot when she makes her move, causing the travel call. That's the only thing I can think of, and it did happen at least twice, maybe more. But she has been getting for that recently, not just in this game. I also seem to recall a couple of other players, AG, I think, also getting called for traveling when they start their move. It's puzzling for sure.

The funny thing is that i don't recall Kat getting called for that so much earlier in the season.
confused.gif
Do you think it's something with Kat herself, or Big 12 play/officiating??

I expect the traveling calls against AG....she's a freshman, recruited for her defense. But, she's come a long way this season and i'm proud of her for her effort offensively. She'll be a force to be reckoned with next season with Cokie on board with her!!

Oh yeah, and congrats to Coach G for her 2008 Olympic gold medal ring presentation at the game today. Texassports has it up right now but the link isn't working for me.....again.

Very odd to see Kat only get off one shot. Talk about a complete 180 turn in performance. Very puzzling. Maybe she will tun it the other way in time for the Big 12 and NCAA tourney.

i think the traveling issue with Kat is because she's not a jump 3-point shooter. she plants with the left foot and steps forward with the right to shoot 3s. so if she catches the ball with the inclination to shoot the 3, she's already established that left foot as her pivot foot (versus someone who jump stops when they catch the ball, who can then start their drive with either foot).

she mainly gets called on the right side, driving to right...because most players cross their body with the left foot to start drives to the right. so when Kat hesitates on the 3 and decides to drive to the right, she gets called for travel because she starts with the left (pivot) foot. players are allowed to pick up the pivot foot on drives, but they have to put the ball on the floor first. she moves the foot before she dribbles.

Lady Bears awaiting word on Wilson

By Brice Cherry | Monday, March 2, 2009, 02:32 PM

Danielle Wilson’s playing status for the rest of the season for the Baylor Lady Bear basketball team is still in question.

Wilson injured her left knee late in the first half of Baylor’s 66-57 win over Texas Saturday and didn’t return to the game. Trainers feared that the injury was a torn ACL, but no official diagnosis has been released as of yet.

At her press conference this afternoon, Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said that Wilson met with doctors Sunday and is being examined further in Dallas today.

“I’m sure she’s doing everything in her power to get back in a uniform and finish out the year,” Mulkey said. “We’ll know something, but I’m not in any hurry and not really ready to know anything.”

Mulkey said the Lady Bears would prepare for Wednesday’s game against Kansas as if Wilson wouldn’t play, and said that junior forward Morghan Medlock would replace her in the starting lineup. But on Monday, she wasn’t ready to rule Wilson out for good.

“You’re always hopeful,” Mulkey said. “I know as an athlete (at Louisiana Tech) I played in a Final Four with a point guard who had a torn ACL. She put on a brace on that thing and she played her senior year. You just let Danielle go over there with the trainers, talk to the doctors and get the results of all those tests, and make a decision, ‘What is the damage? Can I play, can I rest a couple of weeks before the NCAA starts up?’ I’m sure she’s asking every question imaginable.”

Let's hope Wilson does not have an ACL injury and that she can return this season. They do not need a repeat of the Player incident where she went out prior to the NCAA tournament.
