In a trend setting move, the University of Texas will begin offering pay-for-service restroom facilities, beginning in the 2015 season.
In a statement released to the press, UT Athletic Director Steve Patterson said “At the University of Texas, standing still in not an option. We continually look for new ways to expand our revenue base, and so provide the facilities, equipment, and contract buyouts that are so vital to maintain our Texas Bowl appearances in football, and NIT invitations in basketball.
“For many years, we’ve offered top quality bathroom facilities at no additional charge to our loyal fans. That tradition will continue, but in addition, we will offer, for a modest fee, facilities that will help to improve the overall fan experience”.
Season ticket holders will be given the opportunity to purchase restroom passes, along with their season tickets and parking passes, during the ticket renewal process. Both unlimited use, and 2 or 4 visits per game passes will be offered. Passes will be linked to a person’s name, so sharing of passes will not be allowed.
These paid restrooms will stock, among other items, soap, paper towels, and toilet paper, items that can be in short supply at previous UT football games. Also, to increase revenue, UT will accept advertising on both the sides of the dividing walls, and on the inside of the urinals themselves, as well as wall-to-wall flat screen TV’s offering the same HD advertisements as shown on the Jumbo-tron.
“There’s no reason to deny a customer the opportunity to learn about our carefully selected and trusted partners, just because they need to use the our new facilities”, said Mr. Paterson.
By state law, businesses are required to offer free restrooms to customers, though Mr. Patterson said in an interview that the University’s legal team is looking at ways to have those laws overturned, or at least ignored. Until such time, free restrooms will be offered, via portable restrooms, at the intersection of Guadalupe and 24th St.
