UT Students= Horrible Fans

I'm not referring to those that go the games I'm talking about the massive amount of empty student seats at the game last night. Texas has arguably the best team in the country and the students don't even fill up their allotted arena section seats. What a joke.

The students at Texas should be embarrassed. Spare me useless dribble about not giving students good seats etc....I'm a season ticket holder and go to every home game. This season the student section attendance has been the worst I've seen in the last 15 years especially given the quality of this team. Students should never complain again given they can't even fill out 4 arena level sections against a Big 12 opponent. The problem with the students is they go to watch who Texas plays where as real fans go to watch their team play.

I guess American Idol and Jersey Shore are more important than watching the best team in the country play.

Really sad.

I kinda chuckled during the KU/KSU game when Bobby Knight said that all the top teams had incredible home game atmosphere, and as an example he said "Texas' atmosphere at home is out of this world."

Well the students learn it from somewhere. I was at the Memphis game in Houston a few years ago where horn fans outnumbered the Memphis fans 3 to 1 and guess which set of fans was louder...And no... students didn't have a chance at getting tickets to that game.

I'm drunk right now and this **** always annoys me. Yes people on this board are more likely to go to games and be loud, but there are a TON of longhorn "fans" that think showing up and wearing orange is enough... You gotta be loud and cheer your team on or what's the point in going to the game?... just watch the **** on TV at home... and let someone who's willing to make some noise have the seat.

Back to students not being there... for all the students that are around now we've had a relatively bad *** basketball team for a while, so there's nothing new about our team about to beat down on an inferior team.... so would you rather study for a test, go drink/party, do something else. or. rather watch something where there is an expected outcome.

People show up for big games because that's what they are.. important games... the average fan (not just longhorn fans) aren't generally interested in seeing a game where you know your team is going to win by double digits, it's just not exciting.

And to go psychological on you... of course you're going to games that you paid season ticket pricing for.. you have to justify the purchase somehow.. student tickets are cheap and/or you have to wait in line for hours to get into a game.. much less incentive.

May I make a motion that this never gets brought up again.. it only ruins my day.

We suck. And by "we", I mean all of us fans (students or otherwise) collectively. I know that some of us show up and cheer as if it was the difference between a win and a loss...you're exempt individually from this...but collectively, we suck. Not sure there's any new insight out there. It's not simply the numbers in attendance, either.

I always get a good chuckle out of this, though, and is a microcosm of the issue. One of our "traditions" is to remain standing until the first UT bucket is scored at the beginning of the game. Nothing about tradition dictates that we must all sit down as soon as it happens. Sometimes, it is possible, as fans, to actually be hyped up for the game and, you know, actually cheer and inject energy at the start of games. Yet, with very few exceptions over the years, it's like we can't wait to settle into our seats for an entertaining evening, as if we were watching a show.

I've actually sensed a couple of times when it actually seems like some of the people around me felt put out that the team would actually miss a couple of shots and go a few possessions before scoring and, thereby, preventing the crowd from sitting down.

That's been my experience over 80% of the time attending games at the Drum over the years.

The solution to this is pretty simple: block off or remove several thousand seats.

It's a simple supply vs. demand issue. Right now, the supply exceeds the demand, which means you have less-interested fans able to attend. Choke off the supply and only the hardcore people will show up. The negatives are that you'll have longer lines for students, higher ticket prices, lots of scalping, and you'll create an elitist "only the dedicated people can go" environment.

But that's exactly what you have at the great atmosphere schools like Duke where people camp out overnight for tickets, or for days or weeks for the UNC game.

It's just a tradeoff of what you want - but it's a fairly simple formula to create that environment. If Duke's stadium held 18,000 people, they'd have a lot less dedicated fans there too.

Get. Over. It.

When I was a student (graduated '09, so recently) the stupid security people at the LASP entrance always gave me ****. They'd tell me to take my ticket and ID to the counter to print out a new one almost every time because the bar code/strip on my ID was getting old and worn. Constantly having to go to the ticket counter and wait in the lines is a pain in the ***. Enough so to make me stop caring about worrying about it, especially for opponents I don't care to see.

I never missed a volleyball game though... hmm.

I don't buy the argument that you need die-hard body painting fans to win. That said, it seems like the students are still in a "post-football" hangover. I think the crowds at 2006 basketball games were much better, and we had just won a football championship.

Same old tired threads every basketball season. I know I won't attend the games. The Hum Drum sucks the life out of everything. Many good reasons have been listed here. I get more enjoyment being at home and not being depressed about the collectively lame fan base

I hate to say it but I agree. I'm much more pumped and excited with energy watching the games at home or at a bar/restaurant. And people watching the games at a bar/restaurant are usually fun and excited watching also, even early in the day before intoxication. But the many times I've gone to the game it just seems tired and quiet, except for a big 3 or dunk every now and then. Then it goes right back to lame. Actually if you are in reserved seating and are into the game and excited and respectfully vocal...you are almost an outcast. It's strange.

Here's my take: There is almost zero atmosphere before (or during) a game at the Erwin Center. Why is there no tailgating? No pre-game revelry? A trip to Scholz is a poor substitute. If the games themselves had pre-game entertainment you might have much better attendance. Waterloo Park would make one hell of a place for a pre-game party....

Xcaliber is hitting all around it I think. Texas has been a football state for generations. Since the turn of the 20th century-- that's 1900 folks.

So BB is a traditionally east coast, Northern, cold climate sport, for the most part. Most part, certainly not all. There are clearly exceptions. Like UCLA, etc.

Our fans, indeed, most of the state, are pretty unsophisticated fans. We don't know BB x's and o's as well as we do football. I certainly include myself here.

But we are learning, and I for one, love what I see. If I lived close to Austin I would be attending the games. I drive my wife crazy by insisting on watching all the games on tv. Even the last few minutes of blowouts.

I think Barnes' continued success, and a few more years of consistent deep March runs, and the fans will catch up.

So many of our fans obviously don't feel the thrill of the game live. My friends and I have been to all conference games this year (plus most non-conf) except OU (damn that snow and ice on the interstates) and will miss tomorrow's game at UNL only because of baseball's first home series. Flying to Boulder for CU and we'll be at Baylor... UT Basketball has lots of lame fans but not us,,, show you care and attend some games!

Would love to be able to drive to Austin and fly to out of state games, but my job, and financial obligations make that impossible. I do envy your ability to do that. And I appreciate the fact that you do it. I love to see hornfans in the stands and cheering our guys on.

Newsflash. Water is wet: Texas isn't a basketball school. The fans suck. We have to live with it.

I challenge you to pony up the cash for an NCAA tournament game. That's where the real fans show up and it is a spectacle to behold.

Rex.. let me guess... you were one of the fans at the Memphis game in Houston where a third less people made more noise... how about listening to the players?

Dexter Pittman even said we were bad fans. And I'm sure there are other players who feel the same way.. I personally think that Momentum and fan noise helps a team out quite a bit.

And just because you throw money around for a pair of tickets doesn't mean you are a good fan. You may be a fan with money.. but you'll have to do more to impress me than that.

You know what fan is short for... Fanatic, so I would say to be a Fan you should be Fanatical. and sitting on your *** and being quite doesn't fit that description.

I think it's possible for fans to be vocal and supportive without being obnoxious.

Anyone who buys a ticket certainly has a right to sit down and be quiet, but doing so sort of negates the "home court advantage" aspect of playing on one's home court. It also seems like an inefficient way to watch a game, since you could do the same for free from your own home.

So Joe... what you're saying is that fan noise doesn't effect the teams.. but effects the referees in sports such as basketball.

And it would be assumed from what you said that teams with louder fans have an advantage due to the referees becoming bias. Now wouldn't more fouls and penalties and such effect the outcome of a game if they were in your home team's favor?

if so, why are you saying that I'm wrong in that fan noise doesn't make a difference where in your very next statement you say it does effect the referees and ultimately the outcome of the game?
