And now, the rest of the story
The US Volleyball Association national championships were to be held in San Antonio that year, so someone (I forget who) called for tryouts to send a team. I do not know how, but as a six foot hitter, I made the team. Maybe because I used a “spike” serve (stationary, not running and jumping) ahead of its time. We played a few tournaments and then on to the college division USVBA championships. We lost first round to Wittenberg of Ohio. In the losers bracket we lost to George Williams. However, since there were only eight teams in the tournament, the byline in the Daily Texan read-Men’s volleyball team finishes eighth in the country!!
