UT calls during the game for money

A UT student called during tonight's game to ask for donations. I "kindly" let her know that there was a CWS UT baseball game going on and as I was on the phone ASU scored their first run. Then the game got ugly fast. Do these people not watch sports? She jinxed us.

Bad timing.

I feel for those folks...I know they are trying. I usually don't answer the phone when I don't recognize the number, but someone I've picked up the last two times they have called (calls were probably 6 months apart)...I tell them I'm getting married, or am buying a house and can't give at this time..and that is usually enough....and honestly, that's been the truth

They last called me over a year ago. I told them I was in graduate school, and the person on the other end went "Oh... so you're not going to have any money for a while. I'll take you off the list."

And I haven't gotten a call since.

It just kinda ticks me off. The same girl calls every couple of months and last time I spoke with her for twenty minutes and had her e-mail me her resume so I could pass it on to people in our profession. UT should have a hold on calls during major sporting events though. Ugh. Luckily we had a fantastic night in baseball so I'm in a better mood if she calls tomorrow!

If I'm watching baseball and I see "UNIV TEXAS" on the caller ID, my first thought would be Augie is calling to get me warmed up to go in for relief.

I received a call during a previous baseball game. I told her to call me back, and she did during last night's game. I again told her to call back. I'll try to give something (it was for President's Initiative or something like that which I currently don't give to). I will probably give a little bit. It's embarrassing how few Texas graduates (percentage wise) give $ to UT. I know we give tons of money to UT but the % of people who give is lower than many other schools (or so I've heard).

I'm not saying I don't want to give. Or that it annoys me that they ask. What does annoy me is having to explain that I don't have the finances available right now to be able to.

I finally told the person I was in graduate school, and they understood. After I get my Ph.D. and am more financially stable and am not living month to month, then yes, I will gladly give.

But on a grad student stipend? I think there are people at McDonalds that get paid more than I do. I'm sorry. I love Texas. I have since I was old enough to understand what it was. My parents made sure of that. But right now, paying rent, other bills, having food other than ramen on my table etc is where my money needs to go.

I love college athletics and the other programs the University provides, and I'm glad we have them. But when I have spare money to donate I give to the Smile Train, which provides free cleft palate surgery to kids in third world countries, kids who otherwise would often suffer as social outcasts due to a physical deformity that is easily corrected with surgery. A donation of only $250 funds a complete surgical procedure, and often changes an underprivileged kid's life forever.

So my donations go to things that I consider to be actually important. If you ever have something to spare I highly recommend Smile Train.

Is it the Foundation or the University calling? Because those are two very different entities and one has not too much to do with the baseball team we love.
