Again I’m a nobody, just a really dedicated fan but, here are something’s I’m looking for tonight to start week 2 of the season. I’m tired of Harmon tryi BG to be a better leader I want it to manifest (get on them when they start to go off path), can Amina sustain this all big 12 play, Shaylee has to get going (figure it out), Booker break out but im content with what she is providing this far, T Jones quit falling be the dog they say you are and Faye Finish the first time.

Harmon - Leading by example - she has always been the hardest worker on the court and has improved her shooting this year. Do we want her chewing out other players in front of 8000 fans?
Amina - sure she can - why not?
Shaylee - slow starter?
Booker - she's a freshman!! She is good already and will continue to improve
Taylor - I'm no expert, but I think she's playing pretty well. Getting rebounds and scoring, what we want her to do
Faye - Not sure here. Vic is starting her, but things definitely improve when Taylor comes in.

Am I the only one that thinks Vic needs to chill a little? Keep seeing great shots and then Vic chews out the player(s) who made the shot(s).

Vic starting Jones over Faye? And then the obvious focus of "get the ball to Taylor. get the ball to Taylor. get the ball to Taylor". And to be honest today when Faye was in there, she gave the ball up a few times.

Now Maul. Whooo ..... I counted at least 4 turnovers due to her freshman mistakes.

And to put in Herron so early and for so many minutes? Wow. It's like he's toughening them up for UConn.

Kudos to Shaylee for breaking out.
Wowza to Madison, she's gonna be a beast.
OMG, Rori's back from a less than stellar sophomore year.
Accolades to Taylor, so glad she's healthy.
And, WARMEST REGARDS to Shay for being Miss Reliable!

No you are not. I saw that too. I thought Shay hit a nice three at an appropriate time and when they came out he was raging all over her. I think maybe he was mad about something else but these are young adults, you don't need to be screaming spittle in their face to teach them. Love me some Vic but that type of behavior is antiquated and inappropriate.

From my vantage point, he wanted to run a specific play. Codio did not run it right and got tangled up in traffic. As a desperation since they were running out of time on the shot clock sent it over to Shay who hit the 3. From my viewpoint, he was chewing out Codio because she messed up.

I’m watching Maul intently. Understanding she’s a freshman…..so I’m giving her some early latitude. I’m not sure if she’s a point guard or two guard. Perhaps simply a guard and depending on matchups…it will change. Schaefer appears to be figuring it out too. She’s certainly got skills. And right now is struggling in some situations. Against small quick guards like UTA, she shows she is trying to keep up with the speed. She’s at times is a good passer with vision. Using her at point against certain teams might not work and Schaefer seems more comfortable with Booker there. Maul is certainly going to be a very good player…..after an adjustment period. Last night wasn’t her best. I like her skills and big guard flexibility. It does point out that Schaefer really only has Harmon as a good matchup with teams with 2 or 3 small quick guards. Maul is fun to watch….I like she’s left handed….and she’ll quickly adjust. Hoping Schaefer has enough patience with her to get comfortable.

Did anyone see if Gaston had a boot on or? In the one sideline view I saw, it didn’t appear so. I watch the games with the sound off so not sure if the announcers gave any update on Gaston or Moore. I’m resigned that neither will be available for UCONN. Hoping both can return mid-December.

Just because it's a good shot doesn't mean it was the right shot... Taking the wrong shot at the wrong time against the wrong opponent can get you beat. It's the details that matter.

I thought we had about 2 pages on that topic last season.

Boot was off! Boutilier on the other hand was on crutches for very, very tall people with her left foot not touching ground.

I will note that this year's team constantly hustles. There were two times where the other team just gave up because it was near the end of a quarter and our players were just left alone and we put up easy shots.

Near the end of the 2nd, UTA made a basket with 9 seconds left. Booker hustled the ball down the court, UTA just kinda relaxed. Booker passed it to Herron and she made a simple shot.

Then teams started walking down the court, but Vic had a big old smile on his face and as he was walking he pointed towards Herron and Booker walking down the court towards the tunnel.

It was nice to see Codio getting a few more minutes. The small minutes before wasn’t sufficient to make much of an opinion. She doesn’t seem to be favoring or worried about her knee. Seems to be decently confident. I think she has some potential down the road. Not sure she’s a difference maker but a nice rotation player. Just nice to see her playing some after all her knee issues. Lots of time.

Agree Sangre. Booker surprises you with some of her quick passes. Seems she sees things developing early and anticipates openings easily. Playing Booker at “point forward” at top of key appears to be something we’ll see frequently for 4 years. Her size and strength and ability to see the floor from the top AND make the easy pass is a game changer. Her handle is good enough to keep defenders at bay. This will be a HUGE weapon for Schaefer. She has Supreme confidence. And I have to remind myself, she is only 3 games in as a freshman. She’s still making some freshman mistakes. By mid-season, she will be the “monster” that Schaefer uses to describes her.

Speaking of Codio. I really like what I have seen of her play, which is not a lot. Have to say she is a very smooth ball handler and runner. Unlike Ndjakalenda who can be so hully gully, and off the rails some time. Codio ran the plays when she was in like "I don't want to make a mistake and get pulled" so it was by the book of Vic. As a result we haven't gotten to see her shoot the ball much. I think that's why Vic was upset when Shay shot and made the 3. He was trying to get Codio set up to shoot that shot.

Ellis….your right on. Jacquelinda is frustrating to both Schaefer and me. I like her skills and confidence and wanting to make a play offensively, but many times it just wasn’t needed or right time/results. Decision making is questionable. Her quickness defensively is just ok….but she is a big guard so understandable. Managing her must be challenging for Schaefer. Codio on the other hand seems under control and more disciplined. Just different players/styles. Sure need to see more of Codio. I’m more comfortable with Codio’s style but that’s not a good measure. I like both of the players.

Overall this was a good game... finally some decent shooting except for that deplorable free throw percentage. Vic, man ya gotta fix this! UTA wasn't a bad team... they were well coached, quick, and fearless. In spite of our constant pressure, they shot the ball at a decent clip and we've seen far more turnovers by other opponents than their 21. The thing I liked the most about that game is that they were able to expose us on numerous possessions. There should be a plenty of good teaching points in the film room from this one.

The old back door plays resurfaced. If I’m not mistaken, most of the back door and beating us down the floor was last few seasons of Aston’s reign. But some under Schaefer. Pressure defense by definition sometimes gives up a few back doors. Just can’t let it be more than a few. There were a few times UTA got the ball out of the basket and beat us back. Schaefer won’t like that. One play was Harmon scored on a layup then hustled back on defense to stop a fast break. I’ll bet Schaefer pointed that out during film review today.

Post game presser. Vic's thoughts about the game, as usual, are pretty parallel with mine and a couple of others on this board.

One comment made was regarding guards getting the balls into the post. I have to remind myself that it’s not as easy it would appear from TV or from above in the stands. At court level, the opposing guards are pressuring, hands up, bigger than you think and trying to keep the entry passes from being made easily. Schaefer’s point that being a big is tough when you battle inside, run the court and then aren’t “rewarded” for that by the guards giving you a good entry pass. You simply have to reward the bigs or they quit giving maximum effort. Schaefer talked about sharing the ball better. Guard to bigs is a huge part of what he’s talking about. I’m always saying to myself…”give it to the bigs”. Sometimes it’s selfishness. Sometimes it’s hard to make good entry passes. I’m coaching myself to try and recognize which it is.

I, too, want post touches even if it's just kicked back out. That how you get defenses disconnected and it's especially effective in forcing a zone defense out of its shape. The key, however, is to have good passers in the post who understand the importance of swift, crisp, and accurate passes.

Her ball handling is already good...hard to believe for someone that looks like a forward.

All true, no disagreements here. One point though, all posts think they're open all the time. Also from court view, I see them waving for the ball and I'm thinking "Uhh, there's a forward behind you and one to your side. That ball's going to get snatched."
