USM out-coached

there must have been a couple of pitchers or infielders on the bench that could have come in at 2-0 on Loy and thrown a strike

Yes, the losing team is always out coached.

Don't think its a sign of being out coached. The player just didn't get it done which is reflective of the college game. Kids are young, inexperienced, and in the biggest game of their lives (relatively speaking). Guy just couldn't get it into the strike zone. Not the coaches fault.

I would hope that Augie would make the change in that spot.

Hey, I like Corky as much as anyone but when you under shooter is off target you have to stand up and do something.

Come on guys. This was a great game. Both coaches coached very well under the circumstances. The pitching was just bad for both teams.

The last pitcher for USM had been nails all during the previous playoff games this year. Fortunately he figured he could coax a few bad swings from the legacy freshman Loy.

I thought it was both an unusually coached and unusually played game.

We had a Forget-That-One inning, and then they did. In the end, we survived it because their pitchers were not deep enough to deal with this kind of situation. Heckuva effort by USM, and by the Horns. Plenty of pressure on both sides: for the Horns, what we all know; for them, the chance of a lifetime.

I think Corky Palmer reached a point where he just accepted his fate, and that's the difference between him and Augie Garrido and where I would argue he got outcoached. Augie never hesitates to make a move if he thinks it will help his chances, even when it seems like all is already lost. He is constantly asking himself "what puts my team in the best position to win?"

Palmer said before the game that of all 8 teams in the field, Southern Miss was the one that most needed to win their first game because they did not have the pitching to come out of the losers bracket. And late in that game, it kinda felt like he gave up. He knew Loy wasn't going to swing. The pitcher knew Loy wasn't going to swing. And still the guy couldn't throw strikes, and Palmer sat there and watched him walk in the winning run. I don't care how bad the rest of the pen has been. Take a chance. There had to have been someone who could have thrown a strike and forced Loy to protect the plate, but even if there wasn't, at least you tried. As they say, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The next best thing you can do is the wrong thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.
