using the dvd in notebook with my stereo

I have a dell notebook that has an s-video out port and it came with an adapter that has s-video plug on one side and then s-video, composite video, and digital audio plugs on the other. I've never owned a tv or stereo receiver that had s-video until now. The tv is connected to the receiver with s-video and analog audio. I want to use the dvd in my notebook, connect it to the receiver and watch it on my tv. I realize now that I need extra cables to make this happen.

before I go buy and cables, I was wondering how this is going to work. What I want to do is connect it to the receiver, especially because it has connectors in the front. I'm not sure it will work, though. So I need an s-cable, but what about audio? The receiver has left and right jacks, but the adapter only has one. Is there a cord that will go from digital audio to analog left/right?

you need to buy a "y" audio cable. The one end connects to your laptop and then splits into the typical red/white analog audio for your receiver. Any electronics store has these. I did this on my recent vacation.

RNP-

I thought maybe the Y cable existed, but was worried that it would not make the transition from digital audio to analog L/R. I will try it real soon.

Thanks for the help

Actually on that a standard Y cable will not work. That is a digital connection and you need a decoder that will decode the digital audio in order to use that. But if you have the standard headphone/audio out jack on the system you can use a y on that and still use the s-video to output to the tv.

good call Fan. that was an oversight on my part. however, like you said, using the y cable with the headphone out should work for the analog inputs on a home receiver.

Turn the volume down on the laptop and the receiver when you first make the connection, then turn them up from there. I blew out a tweeter once doing something similar.
