using a monitor as a TV

In preparation for this year's tailgate, we are exploring cheaper/smaller flat panel TVs. There's a shot we can have HD feed capability at the tailgate, so looking at spending a few hundred on a 22" or 26" LCD HDTV. Unfortunately, even the cheap-*** 26" HDTVs can still run about $450 before tax

My question: is it possible to feed a signal into a computer monitor (via HDMI)? Does it look any good to do that? Can a computer monitor receive an HD feed and be able to display it? Computer monitors are more compact and cheaper, and the lack of audio (speakers) is not a problem for us.

It's possible. You'll need an HDMI to DVI adapter to be able to connect to the monitor, unless you can find a monitor with an HDMI input. There are some that have them.

I looked into this for a third bedroom. The converters are not cheap and you will also need a way to get sound out. Monitor speakers (if they are present) don't do a good job.

what do you need a converter for? if you have a signal (satellite dish, im assuming) it should plug right into the monitor, no problem.

A cable box or satellite receiver will do the trick. The only difference between a monitor and a TV is the TV has a built-in receiver.

But you more than likely are gonna have cable or satellite so you don't need to spend the extra $ on a TV. I've got a 50' vizio with a digital cable box running it and it works like a champ.
