using 2-way radios in the TX hill country

My parents live out in the hill country off of 290 W and 479. I worry about them alot because my dad is hard of hearing and couldn't hear somebody yelling, plus we had a little hunting "accident" last weekend where someone was injured and couldn't contact those of us at the house. I've been interested in getting them a pair of 2-way radios to keep at the ranch house, but they said they've already tried some and they don't work because the topography is so hilly. They would need something with at least a 5-mile range that can keep it's signal if someone's down in a draw or up on a bluff or something, and has a vibrate/flash feature. Does anyone who's used 2-ways out in the hill country have any recommendations? Thanks!

It might be overkill for you and I can't guarantee coverage out there, but NEXTEL phones are a great way to communicate.
