So will the Ghana play-off game in the sweet 16 get close. Probably not but a semi-final would probably get there or maybe even surpass it. Now the upcoming game should surpass baseball's game 6 22.3M viewers this past year. Hockey lets not even go there, USA vs Algeria blew them away for this last series.

FIFA may be tempted to give the world cup to the USA in 2018 to not lose the USA viewer momentum. The USA is now in 8th place as countries with the most viewers for the world cup. On another interesting note. The USA vs Algeria had 8.9 million viewers with the highest ratings out west at 7:00 a.m. At the same time England had 12.8 million viewers for the England vs Slovenia match. The difference is that 8.9M viewers represented 4% of available TVs in the USA while 12.8M viewers represented 4 out of 5 TVs on at the time in England. FIFA is going to love the USA by 2018 or 2022 when the USA will host the world cup. Also, in 2014 the numbers should be higher when Brazil host the games and they happen in prime time.

Our numbers have been pretty good but at over 300 million people, we are the 3rd most populous nation. our numbers are good considering 90% of the country was at work or getting ready for work during the algeria match. i expect the ghana match to be fairly high in ratings. it will be mid day on a saturday. a lot of people will tune in out of curiosity possibly. all the die hards will definitely be watching.

The Link broke ESPN's online viewing record, probably mostly due to the time of the event. Weekday 10-noon

Looking at the baseball link, it is hard to believe that it was just 5 years ago that the 'Stros were in the World Series.

That's...

Edit: not worth the time to retort. we've got some Soccer to watch, ladies and gents!

I am sorry that the state of sports in your life requires a countdown for the next thing to occupy your attention. That has to suck. For me and others I am quite occupied during the summer, tyvm.

Condoms, not used enough in the world.

Wow the weather is awesome tonight! I went for a little bike ride to enjoy it. A nice breeze coming in topped it off. Hats off to you, Mother Nature.

I don't know for sure but I don't think anybody has said that soccer is a big deal in the States, especially on tv. It is very niche at this time but has been gaining momentum every single year. There is no debate about that.

But the U.S. is a small fraction of what matters and that is the entire planet. That majority is a different story. That we are gaining in our minions is a fact and seems to peeve some. I relish their angst as it will do nothing but get worse as the sport grows here to new levels.

Even if it did not it would not matter to me and others who love this sport, the top sport on the planet. We have heard all the idiotic comments and assertions by idiots before. It's old hat and laughable.

I did nothing to aid you in your to idiocy in this matter. You make lots of sense on many subjects but your obsession for something you supposedly hate is almost spooky and smacks of teh lame. It's to the point we feel sorry for you.

I have dug myself into a hole here many times and found myself clawing to get out to no avail. It happens. Just put the lotion on your skin or you will get the hose again.

The haters over time

1994 - WC is broadcast on network TV

Haters say: Nobody cares and only a few are watching because it is here.

1998 - WC viewing numbers grow

Haters say: Nobody cares and it only is being watched because of some hype.

2002: Numbers grow again significantly

Haters say: Nobody cares and people watched because the USA made it to the final eight.

2006: Numbers become significant even though the USA does not make it to the sweet 16.

Haters say: Nobody cares the numbers are better but far behind our sports.

2010: USA game viewer numbers surpass NHL, tie baseball world series and come close to NBA game 7. Now they are almost level.

Haters say: Nobody cares slow summer = lots of viewers.

Trend = WC USA viewers continue to grow by leaps and bounds.

Haters have to make new excuses every four years.

by 2018 WC viewship in the US should be much greater than the NBA. I really didn't know people watched the NBA anymore at all.
I think they last report I heard was that the NBA lost 400 million this season alone. If they don't makes some changes to the league it won' be around in 2018 or maybe 2022. 400 million is a VAST sum of money for a league the size of the NBA.

Not trying to be a dick here but how are the ratings affected by the numerous people that were at bars/viewing parties, etc...?

I know many, many people that watched this game in "bulk", i.e. at someone's house or bar. I don't recall ONE person speaking about the NBA finals on a personal level; however, the World Cup has been a constant talking point with my circle of friends and co-workers. Hell, I watched the U.S. game against England with over 300 people in a gym here in Knoxville. I think the ratings are much higher than the NBA if these people are accounted for.

Knoxville,
that is a great question. up to 10k people watched the last match in KC's downtown area. Do those 10k count as one tv?

My sister watched it in a lab with over a dozen people. Guys in the Engineering Bldg. at UT watched it in a big group on a tv in one of the lounges. People jammed into the Wendy's on Campus (Jester) and a host of things like that. These matches don't have the luxury of being on at night, prime time either. That skews it quite a bit, I think. I agree Knox.
