USA vs Costa Rica

The Washington DC game is most likely now a play-off game. Especially if the favorites win the next two games. The only way the USA can make this game irrelevant is if the USA wins at T&T and Honduras.

Even an El Salvador win vs Costa Rica will not diminish the significance of this game since the El Salvador vs Honduras and Mexico vs T&T results will be unknown. Although I am confident that USA will get it done, I hate that things are so close.

I really didn't understand why the US was so lax after the Mexico match with their comments. "This game wasn't that important for us to win, it was much bigger for them blah blah blah." Winning or drawing on the road in CONCACAF is as much as taking points away from your opponents as it is accumulating points. The US was dead lucky that Howard made that save at the end of the game in Utah.
 
After last nights results the picture for this game is clear. If the USA does not win against Honduras on October 10th. Then they MUST win or tie Costa Rica to write their own ticket. Otherwise we all will be huge El Salvador fans.

Note: The statement assumes that Costa Rica wins at home against T&T.
 
USA just qualified for the World Cup by beating Honduras

and it only was shown on close circuit TV. Can't find the story on ESPN website. Huge road win by the USA after being down by one.

The one down side is that the USA probably should have lost their 3-1 lead yest again. Good news is that Costa Rica game no longer is important. The USA now has a few months to figure out how to hold on to 2 goal leads.
 
There are some highlights available on the ussoccer.com website. I can't believe Honduras missed that PK.
 
Sportscenter did a great job of showing highlights through out the game. Huge sigh of relief when that PK flew over the bar. I would still like to see the US treat the Ticos like it is all or nothing b/c a win means that the US tops Concacaf qualifying and could mean a better seed in South Africa.
 
A better seed? With Mexico in I wonder if we will be seeded.

I'll have to see it to believe it.

Hong Kong, I think it is a given we will be in with the three seeds for the draw but on the off chance we could be one of the last two's by winning Concacaf it is worth the effort.
 
I've read several places that FIFA uses results from the last 3 World Cups to seed teams... We're not getting seeded.

Brazil
Argentina (if they qualify)
Italy
France
Germany
England
South Korea
Mexico
Paraguay
Spain
Holland
South Africa

And maybe a few others will be seeded before we are.
 
Total mail it in effort in first half, whatever motivation USA had seems lost in the whole Davies tragedy. 2-0 Ticos into the second half and US showing no real intention of making it a match.
 
Tale of two halves, USA dominates second half and gets second goal in fifth minute of stoppage playing 10 on 11 to draw 2-2.

Mexico tied with T&T 2-2 and Honduras wins 1-0 over El Salvador. USA wins hexagonal after the strange results of the night.

Honduras is partying tonight as they advance to South Africa on goal differential and the ticos go from the cusp of qualification to a playoff with Uruguay.
 
costa rica's time wasting antics backfired. Archundia had to put 5 minutes of stoppage on. Serves'em right.

Honduras got lucky, no doubt. but they are a muche better team than Costa Rica. They have no chance vs. Uruguay. This is a strong trio we are sending I hope they all go through to the knockouts.
 
What a strange ending tonight. The Costa Rica coaches being escorted by DC police into a baseball dugout...then the squad being lead by; their strength and conditioning coach, and then by everyone on the sideline wearing a Costa Rica track suit...all at the same time.

Great ending, very happy to end up on top of CONCACAF...however if Gooch's injury was a serious as it looked...
