That was a great game. I pretty much only watch hockey in the Olympics, but that was a battle.
Can you believe all bars in Vancouver were ordered to close at 7 p.m., and extra security was on the streets to police the anticipated mass celebration by the Canadians. Haha. You can open the bars now, might need to drown your sorrows.
That was a first, my first hockey smack. How'd I do?
I wouldn't compare our team of NHL'ers to the Miracle on Ice group of amateurs, but the Canadians do have 13 NHL all-stars on their team, and were certainly the favorites.
Shark4,
there are quite a few hockey fans in Texas, and in the metroplex the Stars remain a pretty popular team. I do know that a few years ago there were more professional hockey teams in Texas than in any other state or Canadian province. That might really surprise you, but it was true. Now, that is not the case as many of our professional minor teams have folded. CHL folded, and now the AHL is here. (IHL folded too I believe). So we have teams in Austin/Cedar Park, Houston, SA still.... I can't remember if any others have really survived or not. I mean back a few years ago even Bell County had a team! I have watched minor league hockey in San Angelo even!
How about a spoiler alert, BIS? Some of us might not want to know the results of events that may be televised tonight. But maybe it won't be shown later (?).
What is there, exactly, to hate about Canada? Got something against wide open spaces, clean air, trees, polar bears? Don't like the mountie unis?
Right you are accuratehorn! I didn't realize that some events are on a tape delay basis so I will follow your good advice with the Spoiler Warning and edited my post even though it is too late for you and others who have already read it. My apologies.
UT does have a club team, ACHA Div III. They're not very good (relative to NCAA and Major Juniors). Every spring some of the UT boys play in our men's league, and some of them do have skills. They actually may be/have moved up to Div II soon/recently.
Actually, the youth program in Dallas is massive, and pretty big in Houston. Austin's is decent, but don't look for an Austin trained kid in the NHL anytime soon.
The big problem for UT to play men's hockey is Title IX. But I guess that's a West Mall topic.
US beating Canada is like TCU beating Texas in football. The miracle on ice was more similar to Appalachian St. beating Michigan a few years back. Canada was a heavy favourite, no doubt.
FWIW, it was not the bars that were closed down early, it was the liquor stores located around the Downtown Vancouver where many of the Olympic related entertainment events take place. It is worth noting that the closure also happened on non-hockey days. CBC Canada - Liquor stores closing early
It looks like the US may take on Canada again after today's results.
Canada looks like the best in the world and maybe losing to the US was the best thing that could have happened to them. they made the change to Luongo and started playing with a real fire, dont see anyone beating the rest of the way. Would love an all North America final though and maybe the US can pull it out again, not likely but hey lightning could strike twice.
It would be nice to see a rematch. However, the US struggled more than I expected against the Swiss. Finland has a nice team; it should make for an interesting game.
Canada is the mos talented and deep team in the tournament. The extra game will probably give them more time to jell as a team. Slovakia has a scrappy team but I think the Canucks will win.
My favourite quote about the Canada - Russia came from one of their players who compared the first 10 minute of Canadian domination as "like bears getting out of a cage". The Russian were not ready for the 'Surge', a favourite concept/term of Mack Brown.
How is the coverage of the non-US hockey games down in the States? Are they broadcasted live, if at all?
I watched quite a bit of Russia-Czech Republic (the names on the Czech team looked like a family reunion in East Bell County) and I think it was live. I think.
I had the opportunity to attend the China-Slovakia Women's hockey game. All the Slovakia players had names that ended in 'ova'. It was funny to hear the announcer read the roster.
Someone in another post complained about NBC(?) not showing enough of the Alpine skying events even leaving out American performances.
FWHORN, as a lifelong player/fan/coach, I think you're spot on.
Coverage down here...
Live TV for on cable on every game in the Men's draw and many (if not all) from the women's side. The over air network covered a few games, but I don't recall if it involved the US. I.e. Today at 2 PM, USA-Fin is on for everyone; tonight Can-Svk is on primetime... on cable.
I've heard that Pacific time zone is getting the over-air broadcasts on tape-delay... but I live in AUSTIN!!!
