USA vs Australia in FIBA finals

Does this decide the championship? I didn't think this was the gold medal game.

Thanks for the link!!! Now I don't have to watch it on DVR tonight

here's the schedule as posted on the USA website. I don't think this game between the USA and Australia is for the world championship but, frankly, I find the schedule a bit confusing to follow. Anyway, I plan to enjoy two very good teams playing.

My mom (a huge WBB fan, watches every WNBA game on TV) watched the game today and said it was really good. She said the best player for Australia was not Lauren Jackson, but a 19 year old post player (didn't remember her name)

The tall girl that you are referring is certainly not Australia's best player. She is big but relatively slow. Fowles and Charles consistently drove around her. However, when Charles made the mistake of trying to shoot over her she got the ball back in her face. However, if this girl gets better we may need more height to deal with her, such as Griner, who can affect her shot at the point of release without fouling her.

I have been really disappointed in the play of Maya Moore. She has looked confused and appears to have butter fingers when she has the ball. She is taking quick shots. And I am also a bit confused by the presence of Asjah Jones. I have seen very little positive impact from her. To me there are a number of players who would have been a better choice than Jones.

Fowles absolutely kicked Australia's *** yesterday! WOW...what a dominant performance. So did Catchings and Taurasi. And Sue Brid runs the team like the veteran she is.

Agree I was trying to figure out myself why A.Jones or J.Appel were on the team. Appel is too slow for the game at that level. A.Jones just too me dont bring anything to the table. There several other post out there, that deserved that spot.

Lauren Jackson didn't really look like their best player in that game though. Almost as many turnovers as shots from inside the 3-point line, and only 6 boards in 30 minutes isn't that impressive for a 6'5" center. Were we doubling her the whole game or did somebody have an individually great defensive performance?

We collapsed on her virtually every time that she got the ball down low. The passes were a little slow getting to her and by the time they did we already had her surrounded.

Not to say that the big girl is not a good player but she is nowhere near the level of Jackson.

Lauren Jackson is considered by many experts as the best player in the world. So I am sorry to have to be the one to point out that she is the best player on the Australian team. But Cambage is going to be a true force at some point so we better get Griner ready to join the national team. She may be the only player that we have who will stop her in a year or two.

For those of you who would like to challenge my assessment, I suggest you watch one of these games and we can have some educated dialogue.

However, I do agree with the assessment of Appel. She is too slow and is not adding much value to the team. See, there is an opinion I agree with. Mark it on the calendar.

I can already feel it...it's gonna be a fun year! Buckle your seatbelts ladies and gentlemen!

Good game against the Czechs. The game was much better than I anticipated but a HUGE 3rd quarter by the US was the difference. The future looks very bright for the 2012 Olympics. Once we add Pondexter, Parker and possibly Griner we are going to be even deeper than we are now. Charles, Fowles and Griner would make us one of the deepest teams at post that national basketball has ever seen.

The US fast break is a thing of beauty! I don't know that I have ever seen a fast break run so well. Almost every player on this team has the ability to finish on the break.

I also felt like we had more confidence from three point range than we have had in a long time. We have several players that can knock down the three with consistency.

Looking forward to the Olympics.

thanks for the summary, TXtoCO. I had forgotten about that game. Good to hear that the USA is loaded for bear for the olympics.

Coach Geno did a good job coaching them. I taped all of their games. And I was amazed at how well they played together, for a short period of time practicing. The fast breaks was the best I seen women or mens. They spread the floor so well. Its amazing how C.Dupree and T.Charles, S.Fowles, A.McCoughtry has improved since college.

Dino, your observations are exactly the same as mine. I am really amazed at how much progress these players have made from their college days. This may be the best team I've ever seen. And it will only get better with Parker, Pondexter, Augusts and Griner. I think Parker will replace Jones, Pondexter will replace Whalen, Griner will replace Appel and Augustus may knock out Cash. But the switch from Cash to Augustus is no sure bet. Cash is still impressive.
