USA v Costa Rica

Match day Two of Hexagonal and a crucial match for USA and it is played in surreal conditions as a driving blizzard comes on at start of match. Strangest game I have ever seen.

USA wins 1-0 on Dempsey goal in 16th minute but frankly it was the weather and the conditions that were the story.

Mexico and Honduras drew 2-2 and Jamaica and Panama drew 1-1. The only games that havent been draws on first two match days involved USA.

USA is now second in hexagonal on 3 points behind Honduras who have 4 and ahead of Mexico, Jamaica and Panama on 2 points. Costa Rica is last on 1 point.

USA is at Mexico Tuesday for Match Day Three.

Who would schedule a soccer match in Colorado in March? Whoever it was got what they deserved.

USA deliberately scheduled it for Commerce City near Denver hoping for a cold game that would freeze out the ticos and for training at altitude to get ready for Mexico. It was a very good decision to take advantage of the location but no one expected a blizzard. hard to fault US soccer for the decision.

Heck Honduras deliberately scheduled their game with USA for hottest location in country and hottest part of day. Everyone uses home field advantage and dont think Costa Rica wont do same thing when USA visits them later this year.

As FWHorn said, US Soccer scheduled it for very good reasons, and yep they go what they deserved, 3 points.

So the US has to resort to "ticks" to beat Central American teams. That tells you all you need to know about the state of soccer in the US.

I saw where Costa Rica lodged a protest.
Do they have any solid ground in this?
Guess not as now I see where it was denied.

Do we have any chance tonight against Mexico there.
It doesn't look like snow. A draw would be a great outcome if we could get it.

zero y zero at the half.

Estados Unidos hanging on for dear life with the defense with the yellow cards and give aways.

Had one good chance go wide on a corner kick header.

Mexican fans booing their side as they leave the pitch.

They must be spoiled too

Seventy five minutes deep and it's still zero y zero as USA holding on for dear life as Mexico lives on their side of the pitch.

They can't quite connect on the passes or the headers with many near misses.

USA has no shots on goal this half. It's defend then clear and give the ball back to Mexico and fall back. Then rinse, wash and repeat.

Uh oh that looked like a foul on the US in the penalty box, but they don't call it for some reason. Mexicans on and off the pitch going nuts and probably with a good reason. Hard to believe US would get a break on a call like that in Mexico City. They did though and on we go with no score.

Mexico with another good chance on a corner kick and the open man can't quite make good contact and the shot goes high.

Mexico on the attack as we reach stoppage time and their is four minutes to survive for the draw for the US.

Foul on the edge of the penalty box and the shot is deflected away and now a corner kick is deflected away for another corner kick.

It happens again and it's yet another corner kick and it goes over the netting for a goal kick for the US finally.

That's it and it's a draw 0-0 for the second ever qualifying point scored by the US in Mexico!!

That was a very hectic ending. This reminds me of a hockey game where a team with a one goal lead just clogs up every offensive chance for the opposing team.

Mexican crowd seems kind of confused by this and is not sure what to do. It's really quiet and that's odd for this place as in Estadia Azteca.

Great outcome for the US though, seems almost like a win.

The Univision announcers look pissed and as there was no GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!!!!

Now even the Mexican soccer team or I mean football side knows you should never ditch the classic uniforms and go with the black
ones.

Reminds me of match one in the 2010 World cup when US drew England and papers next day said USA beats England 1-1. Last nights draw felt like a win.
