ESPN Deportes is reporting that FIFA will be announcing in the next few days that SA will not be hosting the world cup, and the USA is their only contingency.

I can't imagine this to be true, but if it is....

I would love it. See, I'm from the USA and I could set up a trip to go back the country of my birth to watch games. And other than the government taking my laptop because I'm a tourist threat, it would be clear sailing.

I've heard that the US is the prime contingency, but from what I understand the confederations cup next year will be the dress rehearsal in South Africa. I don't expect any official change in plans until that event has taken place. I think ESPN Deportes jumped the gun.

Wow. As a budding soccer fan, that would be really, really cool. I went to the round of 16 game between Sweden and Saudia Arabia in Dallas on my 17th birthday in '94, but was not that into the sport at the time. It was fun, but I would definitely try to make it to some games if and when it comes back.

I've never been to a World Cup and haven't paid close enough attention to know some of these things I'm curious about. A few World Cup hosting questions:

How many stadiums (I'm envisioning NFL and big college football stadiums) are necessary to put on a World Cup?

What kind of proximity of the stadiums is necessary for success? Are we talking a single city, a large metro-area like NYC/NJ area or are we talking about a region such as Texas/LA (Houston, Dallas, Austin, New Orleans) or the Northeast (NYC, Boston, etc.)?

From beginning to end, how long is a World Cup?

How do tickets work for it? Do you get single game tickets, tickets only for your team, every game? Roughly how much do they go for?

I would use 16 stadiums. 2 Per group, and I would let the group seed play 3 games in one stadium, while the other group game is played in another. I would also regionalize the groups by selecting 2 stadiums that have a relatively close proximity. I would also split the country in 2: 4 groups in the east/west to limit travel. My stadiums

Boston/New York
Phila/Washington
Charlotte/Atlanta
2 Floridas

Seattle/San Francisco
Dallas/Houston
LA/Phoenix
Chicago/ Kansas City

The round of 16 in San Francsico, Phoenix, Kansas City, Seattle, Phila, 1Florida, Atlanta, Charlotte. I would have the quarters in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Houston. Semi finals in Dallas and Chicago. Third place in 1 Florida with the final in Washington at Fedex Field.

Wouldn't the US still have to follow the hosting regulations?

- All seater stadiums only
- Must meet FIFA field size requirement
- Covered media and dignitary areas

Yes, they'd have to follow FIFA's rules.

The "All-Seated Stadiums" is really rather easy. They have temporary seats that they attach to bleacher benches. It cuts down on the number of seats per row, but it is more than enought to keep the people in their row and in their seat.

Field regulations are no problem.

Covered media and dignitary areas... in the USA, we call them "Luxury Boxes".

Covered player areas would take all of about an hour to install.
