Read an article today. I'll post the link at the end. I don't know much about the author. I suspect he has somewhat liberal leanings based on some of his comments within the piece, but that's beside the point. What the article does is provide a logical argument for US foreign policy as now practiced by the United States by explaining the link between control of energy and how it relates to the US, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and ISIS.
Based on other sources, I'm convinced his analysis of what our government is doing is the correct analysis. I also think this policy is evil and in the end will prove disastrous; probably at multiple levels. If a Republican were President, I'm convinced the big picture policy would be the same, only with different details of how we go about implementing it.
Here's the synopsis:
1) Russia is currently the largest supplier of energy to Europe.
2) Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar want that gas market. To compete with Russia, they need a pipeline. The pipeline would have to flow through Syria.
3) Assad is a long time ally of Russia and will not allow it.
4) Saudi Arabia and Qatar as well as Kuwait are supplying jihadists, funds, and weapons to fight Assad in Syria.
5) They want the US to help fight Assad. The relationship of the US and these Gulf countries is co-dependent. The US needs the petro-dollar to remain the world currency. The US has large naval bases in Qatar. The Gulf countries need the US to protect them and also to keep Iran from becoming a local hegemon.
6) The US wants to weaken Russia, as well as Iran, and has covertly supplied training to jihadists in hopes of ousting Assad. The US also would like to break into the European energy market and remove Russia.
7) The Saudis are OK with ISIS (the Wahabbi religion) ruling over Syria
8) The other Gulf States lean more toward the Muslim Brotherhood
9) Obama favors the Muslim Brotherhood, but would take ISIS over Assad.
10) The US population realizes that radical Islam (ISIS) are terrorists, so it is necessary to convince the citizenry that the US is fighting ISIS even though we are covertly supporting them at the same time.
11) The Ukraine is simply part of the energy equation as the bulk of Russian gas exports to Europe flow through Ukraine. Also, the Eastern portion of Ukraine is a prime target for western energy companies to frack.
12) It is necessary to villify Putin as much as possible to provide
cover for NATO expansion and sanctions on Russia (and Iran) and to overthrow Assad.
