US Soccer talking to Klinsmann

I wish there was a "fingers in the rolleyes" emoticon right this second! Go ahead, jab at me when I am sad.

FAIL. American soccer is so predictable. Gulati just killed all momentum the USMNT program had. It's going to be very hard to be a fan going forward.

I'm not the expert, but it seemed like a good time to make a leadership change, and the German coach would have added some excitement and anticipation of better things to come. Oh well, maybe there is gradual improvement under Bradley that will continue.

my uninformed opinion is that klinnsman coming in would have probably meant an entire philosophy shift in how US soccer trains its players. so his philosophies would have to trickle down to the club teams, the bradenton academy, etc so that players could be effectively ready to play for him.

then if he doesnt perform, and we fire him...we're back to square one with a bunch of players taught to do one thing, when a different coach might want to come in and do another.

but perhaps we did need a cultural overhaul.

blah.

Joe,
from my armchair, that is what I think we need. A bit of a cultural overhaul. Sometimes you need to shake things up to move forward. I think that with Bradley we won't get awful or something, we just won't really move forward and progres into a truly elite team.

A cultural overhaul is absolutely what is needed if we ever want to break the tradition of mediocrity. Oh well, 4 more years of playing not to lose. Awesome. Can anyone name a single national team head coach who bested his first 4-year performance with his 2nd?

To have an elite team, you need elite players. The U.S. does not have elite players.

Our best--Landon Donovan--would not crack an objective Top 50**, and possibly not even a Top 100. He's essentially a one-trick pony, a midfielder who excels at attacking in space, and that sort of one-dimensional ability isn't all that uncommon, especially at the international level.

**I'm referring to field players only, and excluding goalkeepers.

ugh, gd-it

the ONLY saving grace to this news is college football on Thursday, I think that's the only thing keeping the monitor on the desk and not into the wall.

Just thinking we have to take this guy to Brazil.....college football on thursday

i agree with the pyramid being upside down.

i also think that the match against brazil should have been a clear indicator that our system, while not broken, is certainly not as good as it should be.

GemStateJim,
I would agree with you about the quality of our players, but even great teams can play better than the sum of their parts, and I don't think we even do that.
Long term the major problem with US Soccer is finding and developing talent. We have gotten much much better, but we need to keep making leaping bounds not baby steps towards these ends.

Soccer isn't a street game in the US. It is an elitist one. It costs a lot of money to play on those select teams. Until this changes, expect more of the same.
