I disagree. I love the 18 hole playoff. And even though i couldn't watch all of it, the round today was fantastic. To see the drama unfold, the ups and downs of the round - can't imagine a better playoff.
Today was a holiday in Argentina, so if I had cared to, I could have sat in front of my computer for 5 hours watching the playoff. I love the 18 hole finish.
well of course after the most engaging playoff ever is over everyone is going to say the 18 holes are better. i guarantee that if this had been a 4 or 5 stroke blowout by tiger (which is what it looked like around the turn) many people would be singing a different tune.
fact is most of these are not so thrilling. if we're talking tradition, i'd much rather see a champion crowned on father's day sunday.
it's hard to complain though after the show they put on today
I loved the 18 hole playoff after Mark Brooks got drilled by Goosen. That certainly wasn't dramatic golf (and the golfer I was cheering for was less likely to win than he would have been on Sunday), but I still loved the 18 hole playoff.
not only am i a fan of the 18 hole playoff, but i would have preferred that they play 18 more on tuesday after finishing tied on monday.
basically, after 90 holes, the first sudden death hole really ended up favoring tiger due to rocco's natural ball flight. he has trouble hitting a fade. might as well have put them on a long par 5 that tiger can reach in 2 but rocco can't.
The USGA is running a tournament to determine the champion of the United States Open Championship tournament. It is always better to play more to determine a winner. It lessens the impact that luck has on the outcome. With the 18-hole playoff you know for sure that the winner truly earned it.
It's basically a sliding scale where 18 holes is best for the players and truly determining a champion while sudden death is best for TV and instant gratification fans (and there's nothing inherently wrong with that). So the 4-hole playoff seems like a compromise.
i'm not advocating sudden death. the possibility of deciding it on one measly hole after 4 days of grinding just doesn't seem right. i'm all for the 4-hole playoff. i think it's a really good compromise
"F the fans" is a little harsh. i understand that the game of golf is the centerpiece of the matter, but the san diego crowd last weekend was a big part of what made the tournament so great.
