Urban Meyer: Shady Recruiter?

I remember when Snead was committed to Florida and Meyer was recruiting Tebow. He told Snead that they were recruiting Tebow as a LB. That's when Snead started looking at Texas.

if anyone thinks that's the first time sec schools have used gymnastics or cheerleading scholarships or trainer scholarships or whatever to entice a recruit, then they are living with their head in the sand.

I ain't defending Meyer, I'm just saying I'm pretty certain he isn't the first to pull that kind of stunt.

Kinda sounds like sour grapes coming from a Utah paper. But it seems like every time I read a Urban Meyer story I like him less.

It was also covered by the Gainesville Sun:

" In November, Meyer began calling Smith daily. He knew his ability to sign Moore hinged on whether Smith came with him to Florida. Smith, however, didn't really know much about Meyer at the time.

"I used to talk to him every day back in November when he was recruiting Carl," Smith said. "He kept asking how Carl was doing and wanted me to come here and do gymnastics.

"It was weird. But I really didn't know anything about college football anyway, so it was like I was talking to any other person. Then I started watching TV and I'd see him and I'd say, 'I just talked to him on the phone an hour ago.’ ’’

Ok, well in that case, scroom then.

Pretending for a minute like the NCAA or Florida would take any action, I wonder what the penalty should be? They would probably penalize the gymnastics squad.

Urban Liar is one of the best negative recruiters out there. The guy told Darryl Stonum that Lloyd Carr had said he'd better off at UF than UM! The kid had to call the UM coaches to find out it was all bs. The guy is a master at poaching other schools' commits.

He seems from the limited info I get watching his teams on TV to be a talented coach. It would be a shame to find out that he has used dishonesty to get ahead recruiting. Here at UT, I don't even want to hear that we recruit negatively, let alone lie or cheat. If the positives of playing football at UT are not enough to convince someone to come here, just leave the negatives of elsewhere out and move on. Tearing someone else down does not make us better but rather degrades us, too.

I can understand other schools' willingness to engage in negative recruiting, but I could never condone willingly defrauding NCAA or lying to recruits. If amateur collegiate athletics are not about sportsmanship and playing fair, scrap them. If UT were to have to choose between an HC that had no regard for the rules and one that lost every game, I would vote for integrity over W/L.

I was not born yesterday. I know violations happen every day at every school, but my hope is that other posters distinguish between little Johhny's getting paid (unbeknownst to coach) a few extra bucks when he mows the lawn, versus coach's bribing Johnny's friends to get the kid on campus.

I read the title of this thread, and this word came to my mind:

duhhhhhhhhh!

Everything about Urban Meyer is shady. I wonder how long he stays at UF.

I hear of negative recruiting all the time but I don't understand exactly what it is. Is it negative recruiting to point out the style offense that another team runs to a recruit? Is it negative recruiting to compare your team's record to another team's record to a recruit?

I'm not sure that any truthful statements made to a recruit are negative recruiting. I know that suggesting a rival coach is about to be fired or another school is likely to go on probation are negative recruiting. I'm ambivalent about what negative recruiting is and exactly where the line should be drawn.

If the NCAA just spends a little time in the swap investigating I am sure Miami and Florida will soon thereafter move to Louisiana.
