That one looks pretty cheesy, like a Brinkman type. As far as uprights go, look for a Weber Smokey Mountain. Or for a few more dollars, a Kamodo type ceramic cooker, like the Big Green Egg. Then you have a really hot oven for stuff like gourmet pizzas, as well as a 'low and slow' smoker for barbecue.
Are you keeping in mind that he is in Hong Kong and that getting things there, especially shipped, is a pain in the *** if not sometimes near impossible?
Me thinks that HK needs a BBQ Diner type place there with good brew. SoHo would be a good spot or LKF.
Can I assume there are welders and steel pipoes in HongKong? Time to show them how to really barbeque is what I say. Imagine the looks of envy you'll get the first time you fire it up and the smoke is wafting through your neighborhood.
Shipping the Big Green Egg would certainly be cost prohibitive. But the BGE is based on Asian-style komodo smokers/grills. Surely you can find something like that in Hong Kong, no?
If you want a vertical smoker, go all out and get a Komodo Kamado. I think they ship out of Indonesia so shipping may be similar to what it would be here.
